“And?” I knew there had to be more than just not picking up guys. What would that prove? I could go without sex? I wanted to laugh. I didn’t think I had gone without sex that long since…shit, since when? I stared out into the darkness and focused on an array of lights a few blocks over.

“And I want the chance to show you how a man really treats a lady.” His voice sounded strained as he spoke. Why would he even suggest something like this if he didn’t want to do it?

“Colt, you really don’t need to do that,” I said, and he turned to me and stepped closer—close enough that I could now see his features much better.

“What if I want to?”

“Why?” I whispered.

Colt stared down at me, his light-colored eyes almost glowing in the darkness. He removed my wineglass from my hand and set both our glasses on a table nearby. He held up a finger and disappeared inside. A few moments later, soft music filled the air around me, and I glanced around to find the speakers. They must have been hidden someplace in the stonework.

Colt approached me again, “May I have this dance?” He held his hand out, and I began to laugh.

“You’re kidding me, right?”

“No, I’m not. Dance with me, Ember.” What was the point of dancing with him? Whatever, fine. I put my hand into his and allowed him to pull me forward. The warm skin of his hand wrapped around mine as his other arm wound behind me. The heat of his hand landed on my lower back, and I shivered as his skin made contact with mine in one place where my shirt was above my waistline.

I rested my arm on his forearm, not sure where else to put it and turned my face so that I was looking over the balcony as he began to move.

It had been years since I had danced, but it only took a few seconds for my feet to fall back into the swing of it. Slowly our bodies began to shift closer, and soon, our hips were touching, and my chest was against his.

I slid my hand up his arm to his back and allowed my face to lean against his shoulder. The music drifted, and the breeze danced all around. The lights of the city flickered and gleamed in the distance, and for the first time in a long time I felt at peace for a moment.

“See, it’s not so bad,” he whispered in my ear, and goosebumps rose along my arms. His hand moved in a slow circle on my back.

“So I have to dance with you? What else do I have to do, if I take this challenge, besides refrain from picking up guys?”

“You have to date me, only me,” he murmured.

“I have to date you?” I pulled back, staring up at him in surprise. “Why?”

“How else are you going to learn how a man is really supposed to treat a woman? You have to have someone to show you.”

I laughed, “And you volunteered yourself for this job. Why?”

“I told you that already, Ember. I see something in you, something that you don’t see for yourself, and I want to help you discover that person.” He twirled me around slowly and pulled me back into his arms, “In four weeks, I want you to be able to know that you are so much better than you think you are. I want you to look in the mirror and see the beautiful woman that I see, and I don’t want you to let guys take advantage of that anymore.”

“So I date you for four weeks, and then we go our separate ways?”

“Yep, simple as that.”

“Simple as that, huh?” The way he said it, it did sound simple. How hard would it be to date a hot, sexy, rich guy for four weeks? “And no sex?”

He shook his head, “No sex. This isn’t about sex. It’s obvious you enjoy that and have gotten enough practice with that. This is about being a woman and being treated like one.”

It had been so long since I had allowed anyone to treat me like a woman. I guess since I was nineteen, I had done everything myself. Could I let the walls down for a few weeks and do this?

He said it was a challenge, and I was always up for a challenge.

“So?” He let the word out slowly.

I slipped my hand to the back of his neck and brushed my fingertips over the short hairs of his head. “I accept your challenge, Dr. Barnes.”
