“No, Colt, I would never do something like that to you.”

“Then why did you go to him? What the hell happened that day that got you so upset that you packed your things and ran?”

I tried to breathe deeply so I could get this out. Wendy had told me Colt wasn’t aware of this, so I wasn’t sure how he would react.

“While you were at work that day, I hadn’t heard from you. Your mom told me you’d rushed out to an emergency and forgot your phone, but I didn’t know that. I was beginning to think you had regretted what had happened between us.”

He shook his head, “Ember—” I put my hand up to stop him.

“Then someone came by your place. She said that she was your real girlfriend.”

He jerked back and scrutinized me for a moment. Realization dawned on his face, and he closed his eyes, “Whitney.”

“Yeah, that’s what she said her name was. Anyway, she told me that she had known all along what you were doing and that I was just a charity case like one of your injured kids. She said that you were done with me, and that you had sent her to tell me to leave.”

“And you believed her?”

“I didn’t know what to believe, Colt. I was feeling so overwhelmed with emotions and exposed. It sounded like it could have been true.”

“Ember, I am so sorry.” He reached across the table and held his hand out. I brought one of my shaking ones and laid it on his. “Whitney was so out of line. She’s wanted to get together with me for years, but I thought she understood that I wasn’t interested in her like that.”

“I get that, now.”

“Can we start again?” he asked, and moisture tickled my eyes. I averted them and tried to stave them off.

“I don’t know.” I shook my head and squeezed his hand. “Colt, you showed me that I was worth something, that I was better than I was acting, and I fell in love with you.”

“Why do I hear a but in there?”

I tried to smile, “But I’m not sure that you will ever really trust me. I mean, after all I’ve done, how could you?” I stared at the table for a moment. “I’m glad that we had a chance to talk this out, but I think I should go now.” I pulled my hand out of his while he stared at me, his lips parted in surprise.

“Please thank your mother and Stewart for me. I appreciate all they have done for me.” I leaned down and kissed his cheek. “Goodbye, Colt.”

Somehow I made it out of the bar without breaking down, but I was only six steps down the hallway when I was grabbed and spun around.

Colt’s hands were on my face the minute I was turned, “Do you love me?”

“Yes,” I replied as tears streaked down my cheeks.

“Then don’t leave me. I need you. I love you, Ember.”

A sob left my lips the moment before he pulled me forward and kissed me.

Oh god, he’d said he loved me. He was kissing me like he never wanted to let me go, but that would never be enough if he didn’t trust me.

I pulled back and looked up at his beautiful green eyes. “You may love me, but can you honestly say you trust me?”

Colt stared down at me and then looked down the hallway. He grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him. At the end of the hallway was the women’s restroom, he pulled the door open and peeked his head inside before he pulled me in. After I was through the door, he turned the lock.

“Colt, what are you doing?”

He prowled toward me, his eyes glowing in a way I had never seen them, and, my heartbeat began to quicken.

“I’m not letting you go, Ember. I love you and I’m going to prove to you how much.” He backed me against the wall, his hands coming to my face on both sides. “God, I’ve missed you so much.”

He kissed me like I was the air that he needed to breathe, and he slipped his hands down to my ass and lifted me so I could wrap my legs around his waist. He squeezed me, and I ground against him, holding him tight to me.

If I could only have him one more time, I would be happy. I drowned in the emotions that he evoked. With one hand, he managed to get his buckle undone, and he unzipped his pants and pulled them down partially.
