“I hope I didn’t upset you. It’s been a long time since I found myself attracted to someone, and you make me a little nervous. When I’m nervous, I tend to blurt things out.”

“I make you nervous?” I wasn’t touching the fact that she said she was attracted to me—nope.

She nodded. “Would you do me a favor?”

Both my brows popped high. I was pretty sure that if she asked me to get on my knees and beg, I would. This woman had a stronghold over me, and I wasn’t sure what to think of that.

“Can you stand down one step for a moment?”

“The step? You want me to stand on the step? Why?”

“Because you’re tall. I want to see you eye to eye.”

I shook my head but slipped past her and went down a step. See—anything she asked. I kept my back to her, shifting to look over my shoulder.

“Turn around, silly.” She laughed.

I turned around, holding on to the railing so I wouldn’t fall backward and break my neck.

She shifted so she was on the edge of her step, and even though I was down one, I was still taller than her, but this did put our eyes—and mouths—at a more approachable distance.

“Thank you. It’s much easier talking to someone when I don’t have to crane my neck back.”

“Okay, that makes sense. Now, what did you want to talk about?”

“I wanted to say thank you.”

“For what?”

“For coming by here today and giving me ideas and advice.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Were you serious about helping me design my kitchen?”

No. Ha! Who was I kidding? I was ready to help her with her entire house. Kayley had been right. One bat of her beautiful brown eyes, and I was willing to do anything for her. Why?

She leaned forward, and I froze. There was no way she was going to kiss me. She came closer, almost touching our noses together as she stared into my eyes.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking out your eye color.”

“Why?”

“Because I happen to love brown, and your eyes are a pretty color.”

I laughed. “They are brown.”

“I said I liked brown.”

“You did.”

“I like your eyes, Bradley.”

“I like your eyes, Nolan.” I frowned slightly, and she leaned back and poked me in the nose with the tip of her finger.

“Seems weird to tell someone named Nolan that you like their eyes, doesn’t it?”
