“She agreed. Then two days later, she found out she had cancer, and neither of us spoke of the divorce again.” He was quiet for a moment. “None of my family knows about that, so please do not say anything.”

“I won’t. May I ask why your marriage was going down the tubes?”

He took a long deep breath and released it. “Because she said she wasn’t in love with me anymore, and she had met someone else.”

Ouch! “What did you think of that?”

“I think, I don’t want to talk about this anymore.” His voice was low as he typed a few things on the keyboard.

“Okay, do you want to talk about when we are going to have sex?”

He practically choked on his tongue. “How about we talk about your kitchen?”

I leaned closer to him. “I don’t think that will be as much fun, but whatever you want, Brad.”

Chapter Eight

Bradley

What I wanted was to step in between her legs and kiss her. I wasn’t going to do that, though. Ever since I had left her the other day, I had been thinking about her nonstop. I hadn’t thought about a woman like that since I’d met Cheryl, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to have thoughts like that ever again.

“The kitchen would be a safer conversation.”

She grinned at me, and I loved the way her eyes lit up. “You like to play things safe, don’t you?”

“Most of the time.”

“Do you evernotplay it safe?”

Did I? Not really. “It’s been a long time.”

“Don’t you think you owe it to yourself to get a little out of control once in a while?”

I laughed. “Not when I have two young kids.”

“Who aren’t here right now. I get it, Brad. I’m usually a lot more adult when my kids are around, but they aren’t, and I can let my hair down a little because of that.”

I shifted on my feet, fighting the urge to step over to her and taste her lips as we stared at one another.

“I’m not asking for a relationship. In fact, I’m not interested in one, but would it be so wrong for two consenting adults to have an intimate relationship to satisfy a physical need?”

Holy crap! Where did this woman come from? I swallowed. “No, but I’m not one for one-night stands.”

“It’s the afternoon. It wouldn’t be a one-night stand.” I tucked my chin down to my chest and stared at her as she laughed. “So we can have sex multiple times on multiple days, and then it really wouldn’t be a one-night stand. It would be an affair of sorts.”

“You really are always this direct with your thoughts.”

“Yep. I don’t like to mince words. Life is too short, as you already know.”

“I can’t. I’m sorry, Nolan.” I stared at the computer for a moment. “If that is why you wanted my help, then I’m sorry. I can’t help you.” I started to close my computer, and she grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”

I stared at her hand, feeling the warmth of her fingers travel up my arm.

“Stay. If you only want to help me with my design, then I want your help. I’m not going to apologize for finding you attractive. Honestly, I was hoping that it was mutual, but obviously, it’s not. So, I’ll just shut up and behave myself. I promise.”

Did I want her to behave herself? Part of me wanted her to keep egging me on until I got the nerve to kiss her, but another part of me said, walk away now because this woman will be trouble to my heart and soul.
