She pondered that, moving her mouth back and forth, and I was suddenly tempted to capture those lips again, but I held myself back. Over the last hour and a half, I had enjoyed working with her. She had an eye for design and a flair in her personality that beckoned to me.

I wasn’t sure if it was because she’d admitted that she was attracted to me or because I was attracted to her. For the first time in a long time, I wanted to throw caution to the wind and just let myself enjoy. If only I’d had a condom with me, I might have.

Nah, I probably would have chickened out, but it was a nice fantasy to have.

After we finished, she brought out the food, and we went to sit on the back porch and eat. The sun was setting, and the temperatures were cooling down slightly, but it was still a pleasant spring evening.

Between the food and the company, I was finding myself oddly relaxed as I scanned her backyard. “Did you give any more thought to the swings and firepit?”

“I did,” she said excitedly, turning to me. “Do you still want to help me with that?”

“Sure,” I replied without a thought. I locked eyes with her, knowing that if this woman asked me again to have sex with her, I probably would have said to hell with the condom and attacked her right there on her back porch.

Chapter Nine

Nolan

It hadn’t been fair of me to throw myself at him. Not before I knew him more. After our talk, I did everything I could to make him comfortable and forced myself to put my hormones on the back burner. It was difficult, but not impossible.

While we went through ideas for my kitchen, I got a look into the way Brad’s mind worked, and I had to admit that I liked it—and appreciated it. I was glad that he had given me another chance, and I did feel slightly sinister for the way I had acted earlier.

Brad’s comment about how he would have added cabinets and counters that were more rustic had me contemplating my original choices. I did want the house to have a rustic, homey feel to it, and his choices would reflect that better than mine, but I sure did love the ones I had picked out. I’d have to sleep on it and see what I thought tomorrow.

“What are your kids doing tonight?”

“They are with Wes and Charlotte. I forgot that the circus was in town, and Charlotte wanted to take them along with her daughter, Marisol, to see it. They wanted to treat Marisol to something special since she’s been so good with her baby brother, Michael.”

“How old is Marisol?”

“I think she’s seven, might be eight. I have a hard time remembering how old my kids are.” He laughed softly, and I stared at his profile.

“What time will they be home tonight?”

He shifted as if he were slightly uncomfortable. “Um, they are staying overnight with them.”

Aw, man! The temptation to say something like, then we have all night to get our groove on was trying to spring from my mouth, but I painfully held it back.

“Do you have someplace else to be tonight?” I asked.

He turned to me, his reply soft. “No, and you promised—”

I grabbed his arm as I laughed. “I know what I promised, Brad. I’m not going to entice you into my wicked web. As tempting as that might be. Do you want to know what I was going to suggest?”

“Maybe?”

“Any chance you have a sledgehammer in your truck?”

He nodded as confusion crossed his features. “Of course.”

“Want to do some demolition on my kitchen? We could knock down that wall, get those old cabinets out of there. It would be a great way to work off this sexual tension crackling between us.”

He chuckled. “You want to tear that down tonight?”

I shrugged, noting that he ignored my comment about the sexual tension. “Sure, why not! Plus, with you here, I’d feel better if something happened.”

“What do you mean if something happened?”

“Like the ceiling started to fall in on us.”
