“Pft, yeah, well, Nolan doesn’t want me back. She’s not interested in a relationship. She made it perfectly clear that she was just interested in sex with me and nothing else.”

“Because she’s afraid that you won’t be able to handle it. Having a child on the spectrum is tough. Having another child with a coronary issue is even tougher. Both of those are scary on their own. Stack them on top of one another, and damn, man.” He shook his head. “It’s a recipe for stress.”

“I’m aware of that. I tried to tell Nolan that too. I told her I wasn’t afraid of helping, but she pushed me away.”

“Brad, do you love her?” I looked away, and he touched my arm. “Do you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t tell her you want to help.Show herthat you aren’t afraid of helping. Learn about the conditions so that you understand them. Learn what you need to do and what you shouldn’t do, then show her that you know what you’re doing. Show her that you can handle it.”

“How do I do that? She won’t even talk to me. I’m not sure if she would speak to me if we bumped into each other on the street.”

He smirked. “She’ll talk to you. She’s going to be at the Memorial Day picnic, andshe’s bringing her kids.”

“What? How come I didn’t know that?”

“Maybe because you’ve had your head up your ass and weren’t paying attention. I don’t know, but she’s going to be there. I suggest that you read that information, do some more research. Call those doctors that I added to the back with any other questions, and then at the picnic, show her you’re not afraid of what she fears.”

I thought about that for a moment. “Do you think that would work?”

“If anything is going to work, it will be that, but if you really want this, then you need to sit down with Tonya and Tyler and talk to them about it too. Tell them that you care about Nolan and that she’s afraid that they won’t like her kids because they have medical conditions. Explain them to the kids so that they understand, and then when they meet her children, they can go from there.”

“What if they don’t understand?”

“Those two are smart kids. They spend so much time with adults that they are much more mature than their peers. I think both of them would surprise you.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“I do.” He glanced around. “This really is a nice house.”

“It is.”

“Did you hear that they are expanding the local hospital to include a trauma unit?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Yeah, I’ve put in for the pediatric spot.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, no one else knows besides Charlotte, so don’t tell anyone. I don’t want to get Mom and Dad’s hopes up if it doesn’t go through.”

“Then you’ll be close to home again.”

“Yep, I will, and I might need someone to build me a new house.”

“Oh, so that’s why you are scoping this one out.”

He smirked. “Yep, just a little bit. Mind if I look around?”

“Not at all.”

A voice at the door called out. “That’s the owner. I’ll introduce you to him and show you both around.”

“Hey, Myron, Elise, it’s great to see you guys again. This is my brother Wesley. He stopped by to drop something off, and I was going to give him a tour. Now I can show you all, plus I have a couple of questions that we need to address.”

After a brief conversation between Wes and the homeowners, we made our way around the house. I pointed out things that I had questions about, and some were answered right then. Others questions would be answered in a day or two.
