Chapter Eleven

Charlotte

Iswear if my heart beat any harder, it was going to explode. I wasn’t sure what got into me when Wes told me he was going to kiss me, but suddenly it was all I wanted. Of course, it didn’t last nearly as long as I wished it would. Until he took my face again and began to devour my very soul.

When he stepped back, I wanted to melt to the street in a puddle. Granted it had been years since I’d been kissed, and I was in college the last time that had happened. I don’t remember ever feeling a tenth of what I’d just felt in Wes’s arms. Holy smokes.

My knees were weak as I climbed into my car and went about starting it. I saw him drive off in a dark-colored SUV and then turned around and went the opposite way. The entire way home, I thought over every moment of the picnic from the time he had arrived, until he had waved and driven off.

I glanced in the rear-view mirror, taking in my sleeping daughter, and my heart sighed. He was amazing with her, and she had taken to him faster than she had ever taken to anyone. She never was a fan of men, and I think that stemmed from my own unease. Wes didn’t make me uneasy, in fact, he excited me, made me happy. The little things he said, the smiles he sent my way, the winks that made my heart flutter, and the soul capturing kiss he had given me all made me want more.

Once I was home and had gotten Marisol into the house. She woke up long enough for me to get her changed, and as she curled up on her pillow, she glanced around, “Where is Doctor Young?”

“He went home, honey,” I told her as I brushed the hair back from her brow. She didn’t say anything further and quickly drifted off to whatever playland she was dreaming of.

I pulled my phone out and found his contact information,We are home, thank you again for your help with Marisol. She asked where you were when we got home.

It was a few minutes later when I received a reply.Glad you are home. Make sure to tell her I will see you both soon. I’m off Thursday night, care to grab a pizza, or burgers, or whatever Marisol would like?

We both love pizza,I replied.Thursday evening would be good.

Does four work?

Isn’t that a little early for dinner?

No, I can always eat.

I laughed as I read his comment.Okay, if you say so.

Address?

Can we meet you someplace?

There was a long pause. You could, but then this wouldn’t really be a date, now would it? I would prefer it to be a date, and I pick up two very beautiful ladies.

My heart swooned; did I dare call it a date? Yes! My heart thudded rapidly.Okay, then it can be a date.I added my address and then gnawed on my bottom lip. Did I really plan a date with Wes? One that included my daughter?

Great, I’ll see you both on Thursday at four. I look forward to it, Charlotte.

I hesitated. Should I write what I really wanted to? Oh, you are already stepping out on the wild side, Char, why not.I look forward to it too and thank you for the goodbye tonight. It’s been a long time.

It was two minutes before I got a reply and I had started to worry that I had said the wrong thing.A long time? Since you were properly kissed? Is that what you are saying?

Um, yes.I winced. Did I look like a fool admitting that? I wish there were a way to go back and erase a conversation. I should have never brought it up. Oh, what a fool I was. I dropped the phone onto the cushion beside me and hid my face. A moment later, my phone binged, and I expected it to be a bunch of laughing emojis, but it wasn’t.

Oh, Charlotte, you deserved to be kissed, long and passionately, and if you felt even half of what I felt tonight when I kissed you, then you can expect to be kissed like that as often as I can possibly get away with.

My jaw dropped, and I read the message twice. Oh, my god, did he really feel something? It wasn’t just me? I pinched myself and winced, nope awake. Not dreaming. I fell back on the cushion and kicked my feet up in the air as excitement raced through me. He liked me! He really liked me!

I stared at the message again, wondering what I should type in response. I started and erased my message three times before I replied with a simple,I think I might like that.

Whew, I was getting worried that I had offended you when you didn’t respond right away.

No, sorry. I had to do something.Like giggle and scream and act like a teenager.

Okay, well I have somethings to get done. I’ll talk to you soon, Charlotte. Have a good night and tell Marisol I said hello. I look forward to seeing you two on Thursday.

You too, Wes. Night.
