Chapter Twelve

Wesley

At least I really hoped she would like it. For a moment, she looked almost panicked, and I was glad that Marisol had gone down the stairs already. “What’s wrong? Tell me what has you alarmed, Charlotte.”

“Forty miles away?” She laughed shakily, “Can’t we go someplace closer?”

“We could, but I’d really like to take you to this place.”

She swallowed, “I’m a little uncomfortable with that, Wes. I’m sorry, but I thought we were going to go someplace local. Someplace that I knew. I’m not one for new places.”

Hm, not what I was expecting, then a thought popped into my mind. Charlotte wasn’t a fan of strangers, I knew that, so maybe it was the fact that she was going someplace unknown with a man she didn’t know very well. “How about we call Jersey, and I’ll tell her where we are going. She knows the place. That way, someone will know where you are.”

“Jersey knows about this place?” She asked me hesitantly.

“Yep, she sure does.”

“Okay, I think that might be a good idea. I think it will make me feel better.” She took out her phone and called Jersey.

After a moment she spoke into the phone, “Hey, um—”

I smiled at her and took the phone from her hand, “Hey, Jersey, it’s Wes. I’m getting ready to take Marisol and Charlotte out to dinner, and she wanted to let someone know where we were going.”

She laughed, “I told you she got skittish around strangers. Where are you two going?”

I pulled the phone away from my ear and put it on speaker, “I put you on speaker, I’m taking her to that special mom and pop place about forty miles away. You know where you, Bruce and Adam came out for that party?”

She laughed again, “Yeah, I remember. Very nice place, she will love it. Charlotte, go and stop worrying. You are safe, and you and Marisol are going to have a blast.”

“Okay, thanks, Jersey,” I told her and hung up. “Now, do you trust me?”

She gnawed her bottom lip for a moment, “Yes, I guess so.”

“Look if we get there and you don’t like the place, we can leave and come back here.”

“Okay, and thank you.”

I gave her a quick kiss and then took her hand as Marisol released a huge sigh from the bottom of the steps.

“Just a moment, Marisol,” Charlotte called down the steps.

“Okay, but hurry up already.” She whined.

“Someone is really in a hurry for pizza, huh?” I asked her as we reached the bottom step.

“Yeah!” She squealed and rushed toward the door, and Charlotte lunged forward and grabbed her shoulder.

“Hey, slow down there. You know the rules.”

Marisol rolled her eyes, “Yes, mommy. Don’t go out the door without you.”

“Right.” She nodded and glanced at me. I was actually rather impressed she had her daughter so well trained, but at the same time, I wondered why she worried so much. What had a stranger done to her to make her so cautious?

As we headed toward the parking lot, she began to veer off in another direction, and I tugged on her hand, “Where are you going? My car is over here.”

“Yes, but Marisol needs her booster seat.” She replied.

“I have one in my car.” Her brow wrinkled, and I explained. “My older brother has two kids. I have the booster for my nephew.”
