Chapter Thirteen

Charlotte

Boy, had I gotten brazen, or what? Maybe it was Wes and the fact that he made me feel safe. That was probably the reason. It wasn’t like I’d shed all my insecurities, but he made it feel like it was alright to speak my mind. With him, I wanted to speak my mind.

Ever since the picnic last weekend, and seeing Wes with the kids, my mind had entertained the idea of someday having another one. Did I want four like Wes? I wasn’t so sure about that, but I was open to having more kids if I could have a man like Wes.

Now he stared at me with a gaze so intense that I was tempted to throw all caution to the wind and climb over the console to straddle his lap. What would he think of me if I did? He’d just given me insight into some very old fashion views, would it be a turn-off for him if I approached him?

I wasn’t sure what to say after he told me he wanted to kiss me until I couldn’t see straight. It wouldn’t be hard to do. Every time that he had kissed me, my world had spun.

He turned his attention back to the road and shifted in his seat before he turned left. He was quiet for a moment, and I wondered what he was thinking. Nervous to ask, I changed the subject.

“You mentioned your oldest brother, which one was that again?”

“Brad is the oldest.”

“Yes, Brad, you said he had two kids, how old were they again?”

“Tonya is about to turn nine, and Tyler is seven.” He thumped his thumb on the steering wheel. “I want you to keep something in mind. I wasn’t going to mention this yet, but I might as well so you can think about it.”

“What?”

“Tonya’s birthday is next week, and the family is getting together to celebrate next weekend.” He glanced at me, “We do birthday’s right. We always have a big birthday bash that lasts like two days.”

I chuckled, “Two days?”

“Yeah, doesn’t matter if it’s one of the little kids or one of the big kids. We celebrate. Family is important to all of us, and the more time we can spend together, the better.”

“I love that.”

“I do, too.” He grinned at me and turned down a side street.

I glanced around, “Is the pizza place all the way out here? It’s very country.”

“Yep, all the way out here in Millerstown.”

My heart skipped a beat, “Millerstown? We’re in Millerstown?” My hands had immediately begun to perspire.

“Yeah, have you ever been here? There is a small town, rather quaint, not much there, but it’s nice enough.”

I swallowed, “Yeah, I’ve been here.”

He glanced my way, but I guess he didn’t pick up on the fact that I wasn’t really excited about being here. In fact, knowing that I was back in this town was like someone had dumped me into a tub of ice. Goosebumps began to break out over my arms as images of the small park near town came to mind.

“We aren’t going into town, though.”

I closed my eyes; you can deal with this Charlotte. You aren’t seven anymore. When I opened my eyes, I found he had pulled down a dirt road, and I grabbed the door handle, “Where are we going, Wes?” Suddenly, panic began to grow inside of me.

“We are almost there.” He said, and his voice sounded excited.

“Stop! Stop the car, Wes!” He pulled to a stop quickly, the car skidding slightly on the loose dirt under the tires.

“What’s wrong, Charlotte?”

I struggled to get the car door open, the seatbelt off of me as he tried to reach for me. I batted his hands away, my lungs burning with the need for air.

I burst from the car, sucking in the air as I started to walk back toward the road.
