“Charlotte!” Wes called, and I heard him say something else softly and then heard his quick footsteps in the gravel of the road.

The cabin, the dark, grungy cabin, the smell of the man, the hard mattress. A hand clamped on my arm, and I spun and started striking out at the man from my nightmares.

He grabbed my hands, pulling them behind my back as he pulled me toward him, “Charlotte, stop, it’s Wes. Charlotte! What the hell is going on?”

Wes, not Donnie, Wes. Suddenly, I froze and stared into his confused face. “Oh, my god, I’m okay, I’m okay, please let go of me.”

He released me immediately, putting his hands up in the air. “Charlotte, what just happened? Jesus, please tell me what just happened.”

My gaze flew back to the car, “Marisol.”

He stepped in front of me, “She is fine, Charlotte, what just happened?”

I turned in a circle, putting my face to my hands, “Oh, Jesus, I’d been ready to run, leaving Marisol here. I’m such a horrible mother.”

“Charlotte, you are scaring me a little here, what are you talking about?”

I lifted my gaze to his and realized that I had started crying. Wes was not Donnie, and this dirt road didn’t lead to a cabin in the woods. I turned to look down the path, and there was a large two-story house at the end, two horses were in a pasture off to the side, and a large barn was near that.

“Charlotte?”

I turned to him and threw myself into his arms. “I’m so sorry.”

“Hey, it’s okay. What are you apologizing for? It’s okay, sweetheart, what happened?”

“A bad memory, a really, really bad memory. I’m okay, I’m sorry.” I pulled back and looked at him, “Did I hurt you?”

He laughed and took my face, “No, you didn’t hurt me, scared me, but you didn’t hurt me.”

“Will you please tell me where we are and why we are here?”

He put his arm around my waist and started walking me back to the car, “I told you I was bringing you to a mom and pop pizza place. This ismymom and pop’s place.”

I stared at the house, “What? This is your parents’ house?”

“Yes.”

I frowned staring at the house, “They have a pizza shop in there?”

“No,” He laughed softly and held his hand up. He pulled open the rear door, “You doing okay in there, little lady?”

I wasn’t sure what she said, but she said something that made him smile.

“Okay, give us two minutes, and then we will be there.” He closed the door and then led me to the back of the vehicle turning to face me. “I brought you here because I wanted you to meet my parents, and I thought it would be a nice safe place for Marisol, and you.”

A safe place? He had wanted to bring us to a safe place? “But are you sure you want me to meet your parents? I mean, we aren’t even dating.”

“Isn’t this a date?”

“Okay, so it’s our first date.”

“And I couldn’t think of a better place to bring you two, and by the way, my mom makes the best pizza.”

My heart sighed, and I touched the side of his face, “You are the most amazing man, Wesley Young.”

“I’m glad you think so.” He leaned forward and kissed me tenderly. “Can we get back in the car and drive up to the house. I want to show Marisol around a little bit before it’s time to cook.”

“Yes, and I’m sorry for freaking out on you. I’m so embarrassed.”
