“Yep, we are. Or I should say, we’re going to help my mom make it. How does that sound?”

“I’ve never made pizza before.” She said, and David laughed.

“Well, then you are in for a treat, young lady. Let’s head on over and say hello to Buttercup and Fellow.”

Wes and Marisol walked toward the fence where the two horses were watching us. One of them threw his head up and whinnied, and Marisol began to giggle.

“How was your ride out?” David asked as we followed.

“It was nice. It’s been a while since I was out this way.” I didn’t tell him that I had secretly hoped I would never come back. “Wes said he grew up here.”

“He did.” He grinned at me, and I found myself slightly enthralled by this older version of Wes. “And there are lots of stories we can tell you about him, you just let us know when you’re ready to hear them.”

“Hey, now,” Wes said as he glanced back. “Let’s not scare her off just yet.”

We all chuckled as Marisol stared at the horses.

“Let me grab a treat for them,” David said and hustled into the barn.

“This is Buttercup, she’s my mom’s horse, and this big guy is Fellow, my dad’s horse.”

“Do you have a horse?” She asked.

“I used to, but when I went to college, I found him a new home.”

David returned and was unwrapping a peppermint candy. He held it out to Marisol. “Here, you can give this to Buttercup. Put the candy in the middle of your hand and hold your palm out like this.” He showed her, and she took the candy.

Fellow whinnied again and pushed his head over the rail toward Marisol. “I think he wants it.” She said with a giggle.

“Yeah, I’m sure he does. Fellow, you be nice.” David said to the big horse, and Marisol held her hand out slowly toward the horse. He stared at her for a moment, and his nostrils flared as he leaned forward and lifted the mint with his big lips.

Marisol laughed so loudly that Fellow’s ears flicked wildly, and he stepped back. Buttercup put her tan head over the fence, looking for her treat, and David handed Marisol another piece of candy. Before Buttercup took it from her, she sniffed her arm, and then snatched the candy.

“That tickles!” Marisol said around another laugh. She turned to Wes, “Can I give them more?”

“No, not right now, but if we are still here at feeding time, you can help me get them their dinner.”

“Okay! Can I ride them?”

“Not today. Maybe another time, and maybe one that is a little smaller. These guys are pretty big for someone your size.”

I was so glad he said that because I was instantly scared to think of my daughter being up high on the horse.

“Come on, let’s go meet my mom, and see about making those pizzas,” Wes said.

“Are we going to make more than one?”

“Probably.” He replied. “Do you want to get down and walk?”

“Okay.” She said quickly and wiggled out of his arms.

After he put her down, he put his hand on my lower back and leaned in, “You doing all right?”

I turned my face toward him, our lips so very close, and I leaned forward and kissed him quickly, “I’m doing great.”
