Chapter Fourteen

Wesley

When Charlotte freaked out, I got a little worried. I had no idea what had caused it, or what it was all about, but I knew something had triggered a horrible memory. Why would a dirt road cause that? If I thought about it, the moment that I had said we were in Millerstown, she had become agitated.

There was a serious story behind whatever had her upset, and I wondered how long it would be before I learned what it was. Would she come to trust me enough to explain? I sure hoped that she did, because the longer I was with her, the more I wanted her. Not just in my bed, but in my life.

I had little doubt that she was the one. I wasn’t kidding when I told her that when I fell in love, I fell hard. Maybe that was strange for a man to say, but I’d been that way since high school. When I found someone that I liked, I was all in. No messing around, not wondering what else was out there that I might be missing. They were my world, and it had been a long time since I’d had someone be that to me.

Marisol was tense with my father at first, but I had a feeling that she would quickly be won over. By the time we were heading into the house, she was asking my dad questions about the horses, and I knew that a new friendship had begun.

I walked with my hand behind Charlotte, content to have her by my side and elated when she had initiated a kiss. We watched Marisol chatter with my dad, and Charlotte seemed back to her calm self. He opened the door, and Marisol dashed right inside. A quick glance to Charlotte and I noticed her momentary frown. She hadn’t expected that either, I guess.

I heard my mother’s voice as we stepped inside, and then Marisol’s sweet voice saying hello as my father introduced them.

“I hear you’re going to be my pizza helper tonight. Is that right?” My mother had bent down so that they were face to face.

“Am I really going to get to help?”

“You sure are, if you want to.” My mother replied. She stood, and her gaze came right to mine, “Hi, sweetheart. It’s good to see you.” I gave her a hug, and I told her the same. She pulled back and touched my beard, “I think I liked it better when it was just kind of scruffy, not full.”

I laughed, “Yeah, I think I agree with you. Mom, this is Charlotte, and I see you already met Marisol.”

She stepped forward, and Charlotte put her hand out, but my mom bypassed that and pulled her right into a hug. Charlotte’s eyes grew wide with surprise. “Oh, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Young.”

She stood back, letting her gaze drift over her face, “Charlotte, please call me Pat, and you have no idea how much it means to meet you. It’s not very often that Wesley brings home a girlfriend.”

David gaffed, “What are you talking about Patricia? Wes never brings anyone home. Not for the last ten years or so.”

“Hey, I haven’t had a girlfriend for a long time.”

“My mom’s your girlfriend?” Marisol asked quickly, and Wes and I shared a quick glance.

“Yes, sweetie, I’m a girl and a friend,” Charlotte told her.

“Oh, is that why you kissed him earlier? Because you’re his girlfriend?”

I cleared my throat amongst chuckles in the room from my parents, “Yeah, something like that.” Charlotte replied, and her cheeks grew pink.

A door opened, and several people could be heard entering, “Is that Brad?”

“Yeah,” my father said, “Your mom invited them over for pizza, too.”

“Hey, Mimi!” Tyler called as he rushed into the room and stopped a few feet from Marisol, “Who are you?”

“This is Marisol,” my father introduced them to one another. “And this is her mom, Ms.—”

I had totally forgotten to give him her last name, “Bennett. Charlotte Bennett.”

My father’s brow furrowed, and he shot a glance at my mom. What was that about?

“Was your father, John Bennett?”

The color that had been in her cheeks receded, rather quickly. “You knew my father?”

“Yes, I did. Your father used to work for me. He was a foreman with my construction company.”

The conversation was instantly halted when Brad came into the room, and Tonya zipped over to me and hugged me, “Uncle Wes!”
