“You know he’s not the only reborn around here.You could let him leave and go to Angelina.I’d still be here.”
I stared at him for a long moment, neither of us saying anything, and once again, I felt his desire starting to swirl around us.I stepped back from him.
“I can’t afford for him to go running off.We need all our reborns together.Once it is safe to go out again, we are going to need that power to take back control.”
“Kristin, I hate to say this, but you can’t make the guy stay.Even if you keep him here until the doors open again.Once they do, you know he’s going to leave and find her.When you love someone, you can’t stop that.You know that as well as anyone.”
“I do.”I sank back to the couch again, suddenly feeling so weary.“Maybe I’m just afraid that he will go to her, and the two of them will fight back against me.”
Zander came to sit beside me and took hold of my hand.“Then they fight, but look at all the people that you have behind you, and you have me.”He paused.“I’ve had a lot of time to think while I’ve been here.I have spent weeks reliving all my memories of Julian and recalling all the feelings he had for you.This could finally be our chance to be happy, Kris.”
“We don’t know that.”
“No, we don’t, but don’t you want to find out?Don’t you want to know if we can make this work?If this is our time?I know I do.”
“Maybe,” I said softly, and Zander leaned forward and placed a tentative kiss on my lips.I was about to deepen the kiss when a voice practically yelled in my mind.
“What the hell are you doing?”
I pulled back and closed my eyes as I stood, replying,“None of your business.”
“While you carry my child, it is my business.You aren’t supposed to be with him.”
I didn’t answer him and instead locked down my mind, turning to Zander, who had also stood.“I need to go.”
“Will you come to see me again?”
I stared at the floor.“I don’t know.Hugh knows I am here, and he’s not happy.I need to try and keep the peace.”
“You are five months, right?”
“Yes.”
“Then only four more, and he won’t have any say in what you do.”
I nodded sadly to him and turned to leave.“It was good to see you, Zander.You’ll be out soon, and I’m sure I will see you around then.”
“Kristin—” I paused with my hand on the door and my back to him.“I think it’s our time.”
I turned the knob, and as I walked out, I replied softly, “Maybe.”
I went straight to my room because I wasn’t in the mood to dance around Hugh for another week and deal with his frustrations.Inside, he was making coffee in our kitchen.
“You told me you wouldn’t see him.”
“I was bored.No one else was awake.I could tell Zander was, so I went to talk to him.You know very well that I haven’t seen him for anything other than business.”
“Yeah, but only a few minutes with him, and you’re sucking face again.”
“Excuse me!”I snapped.“He kissed me.I was not sucking face, and you are one to talk.You know that if my sister were here, you’d be in her bed every night.”
“At least I’d be wanted there,” he thundered back.
“I never said you were not wanted in my bed.”
“Our bed and you have a funny way of showing that.”
“What are you talking about, Hugh?You are the one that doesn’t ever talk to me, and the last thing you act like you want is sex.Even when I feed, you behave like you are only there because you have to be.You never come to bed when I’m awake, and you are either gone when I wake up or pretend to be asleep until I leave.”
