We were quiet as I looked around his small space. He had a bookshelf off to the side, and it was packed full of books. It was weird to see actual paperback and hardcovers. They stopped printing those years ago, and now all books are electronic and audible.

“How are you doing? How is the baby?”

I brought my eyes back to his.“The baby is fine, right on track.”

“That’s good, and you?How are you?”

“Honestly, I’m apprehensive.I keep wondering if I made the right decision by coming here. Not to your room, I mean to the compound.”

“Well, you’re going to be a better judge of that than me since I have no idea what is going on in the world.Hell, I don’t even know what’s going on down the hall.”

“It won’t be long,” I told him.“Pretty soon, you’ll be able to walk around and do things.I’m sorry that I had to do this.”

“I get it.I don’t like it, but I understand why you did. What is your mate going to think of my freedom?”

“Honestly, I don’t care.”

That raised his brows.“You saying that things aren’t all sunshine and roses between you two?”

I mulled over my answer.I probably shouldn’t be saying this to Zander, but I had no one I could talk to, and Julian and I had always been able to speak openly—even when our conversations were about the other people in our love lives.

“More like typhoons and algae,” I stated and sighed before I wiped my hands over my face.“We barely talk, and when we do, it usually ends up in an argument.”

“Over your sister?”

“Over anything, but mostly over Angelina.”

“I’m sorry.”

I got to my feet and began to pace around his small living room.“I keep wondering if I was right to make my sister leave. What if I had just let her come in here and hadn’t told her she needed to stay in her room? She is my sister. She has done so much for me, and now I don’t even know if she is dead or not.”

“I’m sure you would know if she died,” he said softly as he got to his feet.“I know my opinion doesn’t matter much, but I don’t think you made the wrong decision. She had a choice. She could have stayed, but she chose to leave.”

“Because I told her she’d have to be confined.I didn’t have any right to do that to my sister.”

“Didn’t you?She brought back three people that you thought might be out to get to you.You were going on a spur-of-the-moment decision.”

“But I could have spoken to her in private.I could have listened to her and then let her stay.”

“And if she had, would things be better or worse with you and your mate?”

I laughed.“Oh, I’m sure they would be better with him and her. He’s in love with her.”

“Does that make you angry?”

I shook my head.“No.I’m not in love with him.I had hopes that eventually we might find love, but that’s not going to happen.Right now, I’m only with him because of the baby.I know that is the only reason he is with me too.”

“When the baby is born, are you going to let him leave?”

Even though I had told myself earlier that I would, I frowned.“I don’t know.”

“If he doesn’t want to be here, then you should let him leave.”

“But he’s a reborn. He’s powerful, Zander. What if he gets hurt?”

“Sounds like you want to keep him prisoner, just to use his power.”

“No, I don’t want to do that.”However, that was probably closer to the truth.
