Chapter Thirty-Two

Kristin

It had been three days since we returned.During that time, I spoke with Hugh each evening at sunset. He would, in turn, pass along the information to Corbin, who would take it to Portage.Neither my sister nor Hugh wished to speak to the man if they didn’t have to.

That was fine with me because I was pretty sure that if he had said something to piss them off, either or both of them would have staked him where he stood. As happy as that would have made me, we needed him right now.

Gideon proved to be a wealth of information, and when he wasn’t locked in his room with Paxton, he contacted other groups, helping us solidify the plan. After hearing from my sister what Gideon had gone through with the humans, I didn’t rush his alone time with Paxton. He had some time to make up.

Ben Tremblay, the Canadian master, had agreed to join us for the fight and said that he hoped that we would assist with his once we had taken back our country.I had agreed immediately, but I hoped that his government decided to relent once they saw what we were going to do.

This wasn’t going to be about showing our faces and skirmishes in the street. No, we were going straight to the top, and the White House was on our objective list to visit.

Every week, a meeting took place in the late afternoon between the president and the military overlords that were spearheading this violent war.We had learned that most times, this meeting was not over with until after dark.We intended to join one of those such meetings in three weeks.Of course, we were not invited, but we would show them how powerful we were and how we could get to them despite what they thought.

Hugh had reached out to an old buddy from the task force that he trusted and had spoken with him a couple of times about what was happening.Hugh told us that was one time he had been face-to-face with Portage since we left.He had needed to make sure the guy he was speaking to was compelled not to tell anyone. We were all aware that Portage could compel just about anyone, and he didn’t even need to be in the same room with them. They just needed to hear his voice.Hence the reason he usually refused to speak with him personally.

With that in place and knowledge of when and where the meetings took place, I ensured we had enough people.I had spoken to all of our humans, one hundred and three to be exact, and twenty-two of them had decided to make the commitment and go through the painful and deadly transition.Twelve males and ten females.

Many of the other females either had children or were currently pregnant.I refused to break up families, so it was only the single people or those in relationships with another person that I would consider, and they were advised of the risks. They might never wake up.When they did, the world would be different. They would live by the rising and setting of the sun, and they would need to mate to someone immediately along with another mated vampire couple to protect themselves. They would also never be able to have their own children.

They were also told that they would be killed immediately if they awoke and didn’t follow through on the mating.I didn’t have time to play around with rogue vampires right now.

I was honestly surprised that I had as many people as I did agree to make the transition.I guess the promise of living for a long time was enough for them.

The transition happened last night in an intense ceremony.I had fed from all of them. Then others fed until they were drained of blood.Select breed members then fed them small amounts of blood.Neither Zander nor I took part in that phase.Neither of us wanted the responsibility of a human-turned under us.Olivia was enough.

After that was done, they received medication to kill them painlessly.Tonight, when the sun set, I expected almost all of them to rise, and the second phase would begin. They would mate with another, and then bond with a couple.

They would have two nights to adjust to their new bodies, being carefully monitored at all times, and then they would leave the compound and make their way to the warehouse that Portage had.His training program seemed to be perfect for what we needed, and they would have a little over two weeks to figure things out.I hadn’t been able to see it in my short visit, but Angelina, Hugh, and Corbin had, and they said it seemed very good.Hopefully, that would be enough.

Since the president’s meeting was weekly, we could give the human-turned one more week if we found that we needed another week. These people were going to be imperative to our mission, and we needed them focused and sure of their abilities.Well, as sure of themselves as they can be for turning into vampires just a few weeks prior.

I slipped back into the compound and made my way down to the main working floor. When I arrived, Zander met me with a kiss and a smile.“How are things going?”

“Well, Hugh is healed, and I shared how things went last night.”

“Have Hugh and Angelina mated yet?”

I shook my head.“No, he said they are waiting, but I don’t know what for.I didn’t think it was my place to ask.Right now, my sister is powerful with the blood of Corbin and Alex’s bloodline.Perhaps they don’t want to chance what it could change to with a new mating.”

“That makes sense.I wonder who decided to wait.”

“Doesn’t matter.I think it is a good idea.”

“Anything new there?”

“No.Portage knows that we should be sending people to him in a few days.So he is preparing for that.He also said that he was able to confirm the information that we had about the meetings.”

“That’s good.Everything is falling into place.”

“It is.”I sighed as we walked into my office.“And it seems a little too easy.I feel like we are missing something.”

“What?”

I shrugged as I took a seat.“I don’t know, but there has to be something.”

He sat on the corner of the desk and studied me.“Look, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.I am sure that we will run into obstacles once this all starts moving, but for now, enjoy the fact that things are going as planned.”
