Chapter Six

Angelina

Corbin escorted me downstairs and then along a corridor before taking another set of stairs to the next level. When we reached it, he turned to me.“This used to be the old food court. It’s working out great as a dining area.”

I glanced at him and did a double take as I saw him staring at my neck.“If I were you, I wouldn’t try it.”

“Try what?”

“Taking a sip. It’s not for the weak of heart,” I replied as I glanced around the room, and my nose twitched slightly as I caught a faint scent. My eyes skittered over the people, many of whom were studying me, and I locked on to Truman sitting off to the side.At his table were three other vampires that I recognized from the club.

“I have a strong heart,” Corbin said huskily.

I eyed him from head to toe.“Trust me, Corbin, you don’t want a taste of this.It would drop you to your knees.”I started to walk away from him but noticed an odd look on his face.He seemed conflicted by my statement, but I wasn’t going to explain myself. The last thing I wanted anyone to know was that my blood was dangerous to them.

I went toward Truman, forcing a smile on a few of the people that I passed.“Hey, Tru.Glad to see you guys survived the bloodbath in Philly.”

Truman grinned, and Keith, one of the other bouncers there, laughed.“Yeah, by the skin of our teeth. The club was hit about six days after that stunt that your sister pulled.”

“What stunt?”I asked him, confused.

“Blowing up that facility with all those people in there.”

I leaned toward him, putting my hands on the table and hissing.“I suggest you get your fucking story straight, Keith. She did not blow up the facility.”

“There was a video of it, Lena,” Truman said.

“Yeah,” another guy jumped in.“And she got knocked up by Portage’s kid! She’s a traitor. It’s good that you aren’t with her anymore.”

I shook my head.“See, you guys don’t have any clue what happened there.”

A man from the next table spoke up.“I do.”

My face snapped his way as I straightened.“What do you know?”

“I was there.I kept trying to tell these guys that she didn’t blow the place up for any other reason than to protect us, but no one wanted to listen.”

I glanced around and noticed that most of the people were now eagerly listening to our conversation.I turned to the table where Truman sat and appraised it momentarily before I stepped onto a chair and then onto the table.

“Gideon said I didn’t want to talk earlier.Well, now I do, and I’d like to set the record straight.”I scanned the room and found all eyes on me.

“It’s just going to be lies,” a man in the back yelled, and I felt my anger rise.I forced myself to remain calm so my eyes wouldn’t start glowing.

“First off, let’s start with the fact that my sister, Kristin, was kidnapped by humans on a task force. The government created that task force to hunt vampires. They did surveillance for years to find members of our breed that had abilities.Once they had a facility that could hold them, they started rounding them up.They experimented on them, tortured them, and tried to control them, all because they wanted to use them as their secret weapons. They put shock collars on the ones they broke to do their bidding around the facility.

“There were over four hundred of our society locked in that underground facility and a whole lot more empty cells that they planned to fill. Thanks to her mate, Hugh, and Zander Portage, who are both reborn vampires, they were able to not only rescue her but everyone inside that building. She refused to leave without them.”

I turned to the man who had spoken up about being in prison. His eyes were bright as he stared up at me, and I realized I had a new fan.Oh, yippie.“I don’t know what this man has been telling you, but I’m pretty sure you should believe just about everything he says.”I crossed my arms over my chest.“And not that it is any of your business, but the child she carries is not Zander’s.Zander said that to protect her so his father would not put a hit out on her. That child belongs to her mate.”

I noticed that a few other people had joined the room, and Gideon and the rest of the overseers were on the steps on the far side.

“So, you all quit your bitching that she left everyone behind. She rescued over four hundred people from that place, and a few of them took that building down. She did not give any orders for that. They chose to do it independently, and I’m glad, as I know she is too.You should be happy that it was destroyed.Otherwise, your ass might be there now.”

“But where is she?”a woman asked from two tables over. She looked slightly familiar, and I figured sometime in my lifetime, I must have met her.

“Kristin and quite a few others are safely secured in a compound. When the time is right, they will come forward and deal with this situation.”I sure hoped that my voice conveyed reassurance since I wasn’t sure I believed that myself.

“Why did she leave us?”another woman asked.
