“But you know that doing that will kill humans.”

“I do,” I said solemnly.“But we need them, and right now, the humans are killing us without thought, so it’s time to play by their rules. We will go after those who fight, not after the innocents.”

Clayton laughed.“You’re going to have a sign-up list?”

“Maybe, but for now, we might have to draft.”I grinned.“But enough for now.Right now, I want to refresh bonds, and then I will take you guys into the viewing room so you can see what the world has turned into.”

I got to my feet and walked around the table.“The two of you can’t take much of my blood, but if you take just a drop or two, it will refresh our bond enough when I take yours.Hugh will also be taking some so that he can keep an eye on you.”

Olivia looked Hugh up and down like he was a juicy piece of steak.“Man, do I wish I could take some of his in return.”

Hugh laughed, and Gabe shook his head.

I went behind Gabe and leaned down, letting my fangs lower as I touched his head.He shifted to give me his neck, and I slowly took his vein and sipped it a few times. After I finished with him, I went to Olivia and did the same.I pricked my finger with one of my fangs and held it over Gabe’s mouth, two drops fell in, and he winced but otherwise didn’t react.Olivia’s face turned bright red after she’d had a couple of drops, but there was no further reaction other than the bond reforming.

Hugh didn’t take their neck vein.Instead, he took their wrist. When I went to Zander, I felt my hands shake slightly as I knew the intensity of his blood would be overwhelming.

Zander and I studied one another, and I felt Hugh watching us.I reached for Zander’s wrist, knowing that taking blood from his throat would be too much.

As I latched on to his vein, I felt his power rushing through me, and we stared at one another for the few seconds that it took.Somehow both of us contained the passion that was so close to exploding.I removed my teeth and closed the holes.I held my wrist out to him, and he repeated the process. The desire we both felt was almost overwhelming, but we somehow contained it.

“Thank you,” I said to him before I turned away.

“Oh, no,” Zander said to Hugh.“You’ve already taken mine recently.I’m pretty damn sure you’ve been in my head every fucking day since then too.Our bond is just fine.”

Hugh shrugged and was about to sit down when I turned to him.“No, you feed Zander.I want you to bond together.”

“What?”they both said in unison.

I glanced between the two of them.“Did I stutter?”

“No!”Hugh growled.“But there is no reason for me to bond to him.”

I lifted my chin.“And I say there is.”Silently, I said to him,“Do not fight me on this, Hugh.”

“Why the fuck should I bond to him?”

“Because the more reborn blood that we share, the stronger the three of us will be.”

He growled my way but held his wrist out to Zander.I saw the smirk on Zander’s face as he took it and latched on.After a couple of sips, he removed his fangs, and Hugh yanked his arm back, licking the wounds himself as he strode toward the door and left.

Clayton chuckled.“He sure didn’t like that.”

“Nope, but too bad.”I sighed.“Now, do you guys want to see what’s going on and why I suggested what I did?”

“Absolutely,” Gabe said.

They followed Clayton and me out of the room and down the hallway. We filed into a room one away from the main control room, and they took seats around the virtual monitor wall.Multiple news clips were playing, and they sank into their chairs wordlessly as they stared at the images on the screen.

I stood off to the side, looking over the footage that I had already seen two dozen times. It never stopped amazing and infuriating me.

“Oh, my god,” Olivia murmured as a hand went to her mouth.

“When are these from?”Zander asked huskily.

“These are all from the last week.”

On the main screen, a mass murder was taking place.Vampires were tied to the ground, and the sun was out.Their skin was covered in blisters, some smoking as the sun began to burn them from the inside out. Then someone ran out of the crowd and staked one of the ones at the end.Two people in the military shot the man who had the stake.

“Why are they shooting their own people?”Gabe asked in horror.

“Because those who try to kill the vampires before they can be suitably punished and tortured are considered sympathizers with our breed.Anyone who tries to lessen the punishment or help them die early is considered a traitor.”
