She opened her blue eyes and turned to face me, a brow up.“You aren’t a talker after we have sex, are you?”
I chuckled.“Not really, but I can feel your sadness now.”
She closed her eyes and shook her head.“Get used to that.I feel like that a lot.”
“Why?Because of Hugh?”
She stared at the ceiling and answered quietly, “Because of a lot of things.”
“I saw quite a few in your mind.”
“Yep, I’m sure you did, but I know from my own recent experience that you have your own sordid tales.”
“That I do.”I rolled to my back and stared at the ceiling like her.“You surprised?”
“Surprised?No, but maybe I’m a little thankful that you won’t look at me like a horrible person for what I have done in my past.”
“Never.We are not who we once were.I know that in our lives, we change and become different people all the time.”
“True.If you had asked me years ago when I was living with my father if I would ever be working to make things better with the mistress, I would have laughed in your face.All Burke taught me was to defy authority and take control.”
“Burke?”I rolled the name over in my mind.“Burke was your father?”
“Yeah.Burke Michaels.Did you know him?”
The name struck a chord in me, but I didn’t know from where.“I don’t know.Maybe I knew him in a past life.”I looked at Angelina again.“Did you see anything in my mind that would have told you who I might have been?”
She shook her head.“No, I was too focused on the stronger memories I was seeing.I will dig around in your head later.”
There was a knock on the door, and Angelina sighed and climbed off the bed, throwing a blanket at me to cover myself up as she strode naked to the door.Jesus, she was gorgeous and damn, she was mine now.
She gave me an assumed look over her shoulder, and I realized she was tapped into my mind.“Sorry,” I said with a laugh as she turned the lock and stepped away from the door.
A moment later, it opened, and Gideon stepped in and froze.His eyes were going to her backside and taking her in as she returned to the bed.I knew I didn’t need to worry about Gideon, though, although something territorial inside of me woke up, and I almost growled at him.Angelina collected a robe and then smiled at Gideon.
“Did you need something?”
Gid wrinkled his nose, his eyes going wide.“Oh, shit!You two mated?”
Angelina climbed on the bed and leaned back against a pillow, one of her long thin legs peeking out of the robe.“Yep, got a problem with it?”
If he said he had a problem, I was going to have a problem with him.
“Um, no.I’m just surprised.”
“Join the club,” she said with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.I sat up, keeping my groin covered.I didn’t need to throw it in his face.
“Yeah, we decided it might be good for us to join our power.”
“Well, okay.Then—” Gid shook his head.“I don’t even know what to say.Am I supposed to congratulate you?”
Angelina and I shared a look before she responded.“No congrats are needed.This was a business transaction, Gideon.We might be mated, but that doesn’t change anything.I did it to help unleash his power and to strengthen mine.It’s a temporary arrangement.”
Gid looked confused.“Temporary?”
“Yeah, I’ll explain if you let me get dressed,” I said.
“How about I meet you in the conference room?”
“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
“He will be there in about twenty minutes.I’m not done with him yet,” Angelina said with a saucy grin.
Gid laughed a bit uncomfortably but said he’d talk to me later and left.
“Not done with me yet?”I asked after he left.
She untied her robe.“Nope, it takes a lot to satisfy me completely, Corbin.Now come over here and give it your best shot.”
Who was I to say no?
