“By my side,” I repeated.“Do you mean as in mated?”
“It’s not a bad idea, Kris.”Clayton jumped in.“You two do have an incredible connection, and don’t bother telling any of us that you don’t want to be with him.”
I leaned my head back in the seat and stared at the ceiling for a second to remain calm.“What Zander and I do in the future is honestly no one’s business.”I looked around the room.“What is their business is planning what we are going to do once we open the doors.”
“I don’t think we should tell anyone that we can open them early,” Clayton said.
“I agree,” Zander added.
“No, we won’t.I’m not even going to tell Hugh.I want someone trying to figure out if his blood can be bagged and given to me instead of taking his vein.I think Isaac can help with that.He could tell if it is affecting the child in a bad way.If that will work, I can quietly sneak Hugh out of the compound and let him find Angelina.Then once the baby is born, we can go after him and work together to put a stop to all this nonsense.”
“What do you think he is going to do when he finds her?I mean, she is mated now.Maybe she is in love with this other guy.”
“Garrett, I think she mated with this other guy because first he was a reborn and she wanted the power, and second because she probably thinks that Hugh and I are staying together.Which will never happen.”
“If the bagged blood works, will you break your mating with him?”Clayton asked, glancing briefly at Zander.
“Like I said, what happens between Zander and me is not anyone’s business.That is something we would need to discuss in private.Now, see what we can find out about the bagged blood.I know we have a couple of expectant mothers here.See if they are willing to test it, then I will.I will talk to Isaac about helping.”
Clayton and Garrett got up to leave.“And I have the journals now, and as far as I’m concerned, no one else will read them unless I approve.I will keep them safe.”
They acknowledged what I said and then left Zander and me alone.“You have a great son.”
“I do.Garrett is going to make a great ruler one day.”I sighed.“If we survive this hell.”
“We will.”He grew quiet.“Kris, I know you told them that we would discuss it, but you are aware that I would mate with you in a heartbeat, right?”
I smiled at him.“Yes, I am aware of that, but we don’t need them knowing that.”
“How do you feel about it?”
“Well, being completely honest, if it’s a choice between you and Hugh, I don’t think there is a choice.I don’t want that to be the way I make a decision, though.We have long-term feelings for one another, but what do we really know about the people we are now?Our feelings are based on the past, and we haven’t spent much time together since you came here.”
“True, but there is a way to rectify that.”
“Yeah, and what is that?”
He stood and came around the desk, holding his hand out to me, and I took it and stood to face him as he laced the fingers of both of his hands with mine.“Mistress Kristin, would you go on a date with me?”
I laughed.“A date?Where are you going to take me?”
He shrugged.“I don’t know, but I’ll come up with something.Is that a yes?”
I chuckled.“Fine, I will go on a date with you.”
He looked pensive for a moment.“What do you think Hugh is going to say about that?”
“I don’t care what he thinks.His little outburst in here earlier was his ticket out.Besides, while we were sitting in here talking, he was screwing Novah, which reminds me, I need to say something to Garrett about that.I know he’s a little enamored with her.”
“I noticed that too.Want me to say something?Might be better coming from his brother and not his mother.”
“Jesus, you’re his brother.”I shook my head and looked down at our hands.
“Yeah, but that’s okay.That’s actually good.I feel good knowing that.It’s like it was all meant to be.”
“I guess in a way, it is.”
Zander let go of my hands and took hold of my face, cupping my cheeks as his eyes traveled over my features.“Would it be wrong to kiss you?”
