“They won’t come here.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“Because we have people that have hidden us and take extreme measures to make sure we stay hidden.”

Two men came down the stairs holding electrical blaster guns that the humans liked to use on us.I frowned as they passed with a nod to Gideon and a curious glance my way.

“Why are they carrying blasters? Why aren’t they carrying real guns to kill the humans?”

“Those guys are to protect us in here.Sometimes we get someone in the camp that causes trouble.Their job is to stop the trouble and keep the peace.”

“So, you guys have your own police here,” I stated with a laugh.

He shrugged a shoulder as we turned and continued up the stairs again. When we reached the top, I realized that the place looked like a shopping mall, but instead of wares to purchase, there were desks and chairs inside some of the rooms, and others looked like tiny apartments.People were gathered discussing things or watching television in a few, and they turned to stare at us as we walked by.

“This is where most of the business takes place. We managed to get signals into these rooms from a Wi-Fi signal not far away, but we can’t get it any lower. These rooms are for meetings and preparations, and the overseers sleep up here.”

“The overseers?”

“Yeah, that is the group of people that I told you about who lead the rest of our breed here.We call ourselves the overseers.”

We approached a room where the glass was painted black, and the door was closed.“That is our meeting room. When the door is closed, it means we are discussing important topics, and it’s off-limits.”

He walked to the door and knocked.“It’s Gid.”

A moment later, the lock clicked, the door opened, and a man about a foot taller than me with intense hazel eyes glanced at him and then glared at me.

“Thanks, Bark,” Gideon said, and he slapped him on the shoulder and passed him.

Bark?Like a dog?

I heard the door close behind me, and my protective instincts came alive as I glanced around the room. There were a few comfy-looking couches and a couple of tables. They also had whiteboards along the wall with notes and diagrams drawn and several old computer terminals with screens and televisions.

But it was the seven people seated around the middle conversation area that had my adrenaline preparing to surge for a fight. These seven were the ones that had been off to the side and didn’t appear happy that I was here.

“Guys, this is Angelina Michaels.Angelina, this is Corbin, Beck, Mari, Bark, Zin, Flora, and Adam.”

No one smiled or offered a hello, and I felt more than one probe against my mind as I stood there taking them all in.

“Thanks for the warm welcome,” I stated dryly.“I can tell you all are so excited to see me.”

One of the guys, Zin, I think, made a pfft’ing noise as he looked away.

“Why are you here?”Flora demanded to know. Her dark hair was pulled into a long braid at the back of her head, her soft brown skin flawless, and her brown eyes had small flecks of gold in them as they glared at me.

“I’m passing through.Gideon invited me to visit for a day or two.”A few of them glanced at one another.“Don’t worry, kids.I’m not planning on raining on your parade and taking over your fun.I just want to rest for a couple of days, and then I’ll be on my way.”

Bark frowned as if he wasn’t keen on my words and his eyes stole toward Corbin, whose handsome face was void of any emotion.

“Good to hear,” Adam said as he stood.“Since you aren’t staying, you can leave the room.We were discussing things that don’t have anything to do with you.”

I was pretty sure that was a lie.I did not doubt that they had been discussing me particularly.I could feel it in the air around me, even though I wasn’t trying.

Adam and I studied one another for a few tense moments, and I felt him probe harder against my mind.Maybe he wanted to give me a personal greeting, or perhaps he was trying to do something else.I didn’t know, and I didn’t care as I stared into his dark-blue eyes.He reminded me of Rex, and I knew I would have to watch my back around that man.

“Hey, Adam, cut the shit. She’s a guest here, and she can stay and listen,” Gideon said.

A few people bristled, and I scanned the room.“They are right, Gideon.I shouldn’t be here. This has nothing to do with me.If you could show me where I can rest for a little while, they can get back to their powwow.”
