He chuckled huskily.“I was wondering how long it would take you to ask that.I do not have any special deal in place, although that is not to say I didn’t try.How about I show you?”

“That would be just dandy,” I responded.

Portage walked me down a hall and then into a stairwell where he used a key fob to open the door to go down. For only a second, I hesitated. Was he bringing me to the dungeon?

“Fear not, Angelina, you are safe and free to go almost anywhere inside the building.I am not trying to trap you.You may leave at any time, although I cannot promise you would be safe if you did.”

“But you can promise I would be safe here?”

“Very,” he said with a grin that looked twisted with evil.

I followed him down the stairs. The only sounds were my heels as they tapped down the cement stairs. At the bottom of the stairs, he used his key fob again and held the door open for me.

As we stepped in, I felt Corbin calling out to me.“I’m fine.I’m taking a tour.I’ll see you in a little while.”

I shut him out after that because I wanted to have my focus on the man leading me down a dark hallway into the bowels of the hotel.Even I didn’t venture into this area in the one we’d lived in near Philly. It creeped me out and reminded me of horror movies.

Was I about to experience my own horror flick?

We came to a room, and he put his finger to his lips.“You must be quiet so as not to disturb them.Breaking their concentration can lead to catastrophic consequences.”

I hiked a brow.Well, this should be interesting.

He opened the door, and we stepped in.I froze when I saw the scene in front of me.Five women were sitting in a circle with their legs crossed and in some kind of trance.Around them, the air swirled gently, and the energy was intense.

“What are you they doing?”I asked Joseph privately, knowing that we were close enough that we could communicate. If you had asked me if I would ever be having an intimate conversation with this man, I would have laughed myself sick, but stranger things had happened recently.

“They are holding up a shield.”

My gaze popped to his.“They are human-turned?”

He nodded.“We have twelve women here who can control air, and they focus their energy on the outside of the building and keep the shield up.No one can see in.If humans look at the building, they see a dilapidated hotel that no one goes to.”

“And they do this all day, every day?”

“They take turns and do it in shifts, but yes.The shield stays in place always.”

I didn’t want to, but I had to say I was impressed. What would Kristin think of this?

He motioned for us to leave, and I followed him out, making sure to walk on the balls of my feet to keep from making noise.

Once the door was closed and we were a few feet away, I asked, “How many human-turned do you have?”

He studied me carefully.“If I tell you, you aren’t going to go tattle on me to your sister, are you?I know that she made it illegal.I’d hate to get in trouble with her when I am just trying to protect our people.”

“I think she will overlook it right now.Besides, when were you ever concerned with breaking the breed law?”

“Ah, true, and I have sixty-three human-turned.”

I stopped dead in my tracks.“Sixty-three?”

“Yes.Are you offended?”

“No, actually, I’m rather impressed, but I will never admit that in public. How did you get so many?”

“I started with volunteers.”

I eyed him critically.“Volunteers that didn’t have any other choice?”
