“Absolutely not.I asked those humans who worked with us and sympathized with us if they wanted to help. They all decided on their own, and I didn’t even have to compel them.”He paused and shrugged.“Well, most of them.”

We reached the stairs and started to head back up.“Are you disturbed by what I have told you?”

I shook my head.“Surprisingly, no.I see how it could work.”

“There is a lot that could work, Angelina. This is just the first step. You might not believe this, but I wish to bury the hatchet with your sister—at least for the time being—and take back what is rightfully ours.”

We reached the main floor, and I stood there staring down the corridor toward the front lobby. What would Kristin think of all this?Would she be willing to speak to Joseph?Work with him?I wasn’t sure, but if it meant freedom, then maybe she would.

“Well, you have about four months to prove to me that you are true to your word.I know for a fact that she will return to us after a year is up.Once she does, if you have convinced me that we might have a chance, I will speak to her on your behalf.”

He held his coffee cup up.“Then a toast to a new partnership.I mean what I say.I do not wish to harm her or fight with her.We have more important things to do at this time than fight amongst ourselves.”

“I agree.”

One of his lackeys that waited for us in the hallway stepped forward.“Sir, you are needed upstairs.”

He turned to me.“Please bring your friends and join me for a meal in about an hour.I need to take care of some business.”He nodded and was gone.

I watched him leave, all four of his guards following in his footsteps, and I wondered if I could really trust him to do as he said.
