“I would like for you to leave your sister and her mate here with us, though,” he stated.

“Why is that?”

“Because I need some reassurance that you will return and follow through.”

“You want to hold them as leverage?”

“No, just as a good faith token. They, of course, will be free to move around, and I will not torture anyone else.”

“I will speak to them, but if you are going to keep Lena here, then you can expect Hugh to stay also.”

“All the better.”

Kristin and I left after he told us where we’d be staying, and we made our way to the elevator and up to the seventh floor.

“I want to stop and see Hugh before we meet with Henry and Clayton.”

“Of course.”

Kristin knocked on a door halfway down the hallway.A moment later, the door opened.A man with a scar on his face that neither of us knew stood there.

He instantly bowed his head.“Mistress.I’m Gideon. Please come in.”

We stepped in and said hello to him.“I’m Zander,” I told him, and he bowed his head again.

“I believe that is Master now, correct?”

I chuckled.“Yeah, but you can call me Zander.”

“Sir.”He smiled at me as Kristin headed toward the bedroom where she heard Angelina talking.

“Holy shit!”Kristin hissed as she disappeared inside the room, and I quickly followed to see her leaning over the bed.“My god, Hugh.I could stake that man for what he did to you.I saw the image that Lena sent me, but it did not do justice to your injuries.”

Hugh’s voice was rough as he spoke.“You should have seen me an hour ago.I looked like a Maine lobster.”

Kristin closed her eyes.“I am so sorry about this.”

He lifted his blistered hand.“It’s not your fault, and I would do it again.”

He turned to look at me.“Zander.”

“Hugh, I’m glad that we got here in time.”

“Yeah, not sure how much longer I could have gone through that,” he replied huskily.

“Let me feed you,” Kristin said as she scored her wrist while moving to the head of the bed.Angelina moved out of the way and came to stand by me.

“Is the baby really okay?”

“Yes, she is.”

“What happened?”

While Hugh was feeding from Kristin, he was looking at me, and I shifted closer to the bed to make it easier for him to hear.

“This is gonna sound nuts, but your daughter knew that you were in trouble and decided she needed to be born sooner rather than later.”

“But she still had what, almost two months to go?Is she alright?”Angelina asked.
