“Alright, spill,” Cara said as she hooked her elbow with mine.

“Spill what?”

“What’s going on with Bollard?”

I glanced at the kids. Luke was toddling around after Harley, who raced circles around a couple of hay bales. “I’m not sure what is going on.”

“Are you sleeping with him?”

I nodded. “We were.”

“You were? You’re not now?”

I glanced back at the men under the umbrella. “I don’t know what we are. I kept telling myself that I couldn’t get involved with him because he wasn’t right for me, and even if he was right for me, this secret was between us, and I could never let my guard down on that.”

“How did he find out?”

I rolled my eyes. “I was in the process of telling him that he and Harley could keep staying at my house until they found a place, but I was going to stay at Dad’s. My phone vibrated, and I unlocked my phone, but then Harley interrupted us and said he had spilled his milk. I dropped my phone without locking it and went inside. You texted at that moment, and he saw it.”

“What did he do when he saw it?”

“He got downright scary,” I said, then shook my head. “He was shocked and demanded I tell him where you guys were. I wouldn’t at first, but then he said that if I didn’t tell him, he would call someone at the club and tell them. He said it wouldn’t take long for them to track you guys down.”

She sighed. “So you told him.”

“I didn’t think I had much choice. I could take the chance that Bryan could talk some sense into him, or I could take the chance that the club couldn’t find you.” I paused. “I was hoping he’d see Bryan, and well—” The two of us stared at the men.

“That this would happen, and these two good friends would put friendship above everything else.”

“Yeah. Mike really is trying to get his life straightened out. He’s buying the tavern. He’s working hard. Now he has Harley to care for, and he’s doing an excellent job. I haven’t even heard him mention anyone from the club, and no one has been around the tavern.”

“So you think he’s really out?”

I nodded. “I do.”

“And now he knows our secret, so that’s not between you two anymore. What now?”

I shook my head as we followed the kids out of the barn and toward the paddock where a few horses were hanging out.

“I don’t know, Cara.”

“Do you care about him?”

I nodded. “I do. He’s a nice guy and smarter than he lets on.”

“Is he any good in bed?” I couldn’t hold back the grin, and she grabbed my arm with both hands and giggled. “Tell me he claimed you.”

“Oh, he did,” I said with an exaggerated nod. “Several times.”

“Do you love him?”

I stared out over the vast property, my hands shoved into the back pockets of my jeans. “Maybe.”

“What do you mean, maybe? You either love him, or you don’t.”

“I mean, I like him a lot, but I don’t know if it’s love. The sex is fantastic, but this isn’t just about my feelings for Mike. It’s about the responsibility for him.” I jutted my chin toward Harley. “He has a lot of emotional baggage, and I’m not sure I wanted to take that on.”

She frowned. “It looks like you already took that on. I know you helped get him in front of Carmen, and they are staying at your house. You had Wes do a physical. I bet you read him books before bed and hug him when he looks sad.”
