“I can hear you. Where are you?”

“At the club. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be home tonight. I will be back in the afternoon.”

“Be safe, and stay out of trouble,” she tells him.

“Don’t worry about me.”

“Don’t you have to be at the field tomorrow?” she asks him.

“Nah, Coach gave us the day off.”

“Okay.”

“Are you home?” he asks.

“Yeah, I just got in.”

“Is Brock there?”

“Yes.” I reply.

“Good. Let him know he’s missing out, will ya?” He laughs. “Gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Bye,” she says, but he’s already hung up. “I take it you heard all of that?”

“Yeah, kind of hard not to. I hope they stay out of trouble.”

“You and me both,” she says, shivering.

“You cold?”

“A little.”

“Let’s go inside.” She stands, and I lean over to grab my notebook. Not because I need it, but because tucked within the pages is a note from her. I’ve kept every one of them. I walk behind her into the house. She smiles at me over her shoulder and makes her way upstairs. Knowing we’re both in for the night, I make sure the back door is locked and the front too before setting the alarm and turning off the lights.

Her door is shut, and I’m tempted to go to her, but she shut it for a reason. She knows it’s just the two of us until tomorrow afternoon. So, if she wanted me, she’d have left it open. I try not to be salty about it as I step into my room. The room is dark, but I know my way by now. I head for the nightstand to place mynotebook inside. I’m hoping I can get just a few hours’ sleep now that she’s home and after holding her in my arms.

I strip down to my boxer briefs and turn to climb in bed, and that’s when I see her in my bed. “Joey?”

“Is this okay?” she asks hesitantly.

“More than okay,” I say, sliding under the covers next to her. She moves closer, settling her head on my chest, and I take full advantage of having her here and wrap my arm around her, holding her close. We’re both quiet, but I know she can feel my heart pounding in my chest. She has to. The rapid beat tells me there is no shutting this down. I can’t fight this pull she has over me. It’s more than just desire.

It’s deeper.

Pressing my lips to the top of her head, my body relaxes into the mattress. I close my eyes, willing myself to be a gentleman and go to sleep, while keeping my hands off her. I need to sleep.

“Brock?”

“Yeah, Sunshine?”

“Tell me a story.”

“Once upon a time,” I say automatically, “there was a man who had his world turned upside from his career. He called his best friend, and his friend offered him a place to stay. Little did the man know that his best friend’s sister was going to show up while he was staying there. The sister, she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever laid eyes on. As the weeks pass by, the man tries to hide his attraction to her, but it grows by leaps and bounds every day.” I pause, getting lost in my own thoughts about Joey and the time I’ve spent with her since I’ve been here.

“Keep going,” she urges.

“The man, he’s torn. He knows that she’s supposed to be off-limits, but they share a connection he’s never felt before. He struggles with the fact that he could lose his best friend, and maybe even the woman if things go bad.”
