“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” I snarled into the receiver, startling a student walking by.

“Nothing, Lucifer. Nothing at all. Just sort it out because everyone is starting to get antsy. We don’t need to draw Father’s attention here.”

“Not when you and our brothers have claimed humans but not taken their souls?” It was a pointedly hypocritical statement, but I wasn’t going to let Mammon know about Eve. No, she would remain a secret even from them.

“If you didn’t treat women as whores, maybe you would understand.”

I barked a laugh at my brother’s change of tune. Only last month, he was the one calling women whores, not me. At least the women I’d been with before Eve knew I only wanted one thing from them. And now … they were nothing. There was only her.

“This conversation is as tedious as you. Goodbye.” I hung up, tucking the phone into my pocket as I followed her through the old building into the glass dome study hall. Shifting to invisibility so I wouldn’t be seen, I watched her deliver a couple of books to studious peers before carrying on her way.

“That’s her.” My ears pricked at the words as I slowed my gait and turned to the voices. Two guys were huddled together, looking at a phone. I stepped closer, confirming my suspicions as I saw a photo of Eve splayed out on a bed naked for anyone to see.

A low, menacing growl crawled from my chest, rumbling out and into the ears of the men.

“What the hell is that?” He looked around for a source before glancing at his friend to make sure he’d heard it too. Grabbing them both by the scruff of the neck, I transported them to the warehouse, tossing them onto the floor.

“What the fuck?!” They scrambled away in terror, looking around and trying to make sense of what had just happened. But there would be no answers from me. I only saw blood as I cracked my knuckles and considered reaching for the tray of tools at my disposal.

However, that wouldn’t be nearly as fun as using my bare hands.

“Who sent you this photo?” I bent, grabbing the discarded phone and holding it up quickly so they knew I was talking about Eve. I crushed the phone between my fingers, dropping the skeletal remains on the floor at my feet.

“W-who are you?”

“I asked you a fucking question!” I bellowed, watching as they skirted backward toward the wall in fear. One had pissed himself as the smell of urine filled the room. Pathetic. Humans were truly pathetic, and none of them were deserving of my little dove.

“A fraternity brother sent it to me. Dillon, or Derrick … something like that.” The non-urine-soaked one managed to find his tongue as he stared at me. “What are you going to do to us?”

“What fraternity?”

“Alpha Delta Phi,” he stammered.

I nodded. “Good. For your usefulness, I’ll only take your eyes. Your friend, on the other hand, will be a message to the others. Remove the photos or suffer my wrath. Am I understood?”

The one I was speaking to nodded his head rapidly as the mute friend whimpered with fear. And he should fear me. I stretched out into my true form, letting him see me in my full glory. I feasted on their fearful screams, approaching mercilessly as I fulfilled my promise: one, a statement, and the other, a messenger.

No one would take advantage of Eve again. Not on my watch.

EVE

My phone was blowingup when I got off work. The few girlfriends I had dated boys in the Alpha Delt said someone had shown up to the house missing his eyes, claiming someone had taken them as punishment for looking at me.

Then someone sent me a picture, and there he was—eyeless.

What the hell?

“Lucifer,” I muttered as I walked down the street toward where he’d promised to pick me up. I was supposed to be angry he would even do something like that, but since I’d seen him do it before, I was almost numb to the news and found myself more aggrieved by the unnecessary attention this was drawing for me.

I preferred to slip into the shadows with my demon lover instead of getting caught in this drama. Besides, wouldn’t showy flashes of power like this draw unnecessary attention to his presence? Surely that wasn’t something he wanted.

A dark car rolled up to the curb in front of me, stopping as the passenger window rolled down. “Eve?” the driver called out to me, drawing my attention to him. It wasn’t Luc.

I leaned into the window, surveying the driver. But he did look a lot like Luc. “Did Lucifer send you?” I was testing him. He wouldn’t find the name strange if he knew Luc’s real identity.

The driver’s eyes flashed for a moment before he smiled. “He did. I’m Amadeus or Asmodeus.” He leaned out, holding his hand out to me. “I’m Luc’s older brother.”

Vessel-wise, I believed that, but I always thought since Lucifer was the first fallen angel, he would be the oldest.
