“Nice to meet you. I’m Eve.” I shook his hand before pulling the door open and slipping in. “He didn’t tell me he couldn’t make it tonight.”

“Luc is … preoccupied tonight.” He waited as I buckled myself in before shifting into gear and pulling away from the curb. When he turned off the street, going the opposite direction of Luc’s apartment, lead settled in the pit of my stomach.

“Where are we going?”

“To meet Luc and your father.”

He slipped the last part in so casually that I almost didn’t question it. But then the words echoed in my ear—my father? What was Luc doing with him?

“I don’t understand.”

“I’m sure you will once we get there. Luc took his time bringing you in, but your presence is necessary for us to get what we need from your father.”

“Father,” I repeated, trying to understand what Amadeus was saying without actually saying it. This was more like the demons of lore as I understood them—tricksters, conniving.

I was scared for the first time since I saw Lucifer’s true self. I was missing the punchline, but I didn’t know the joke either.

“Maybe I should go to the apartment and wait for Luc to come and get me himself.” I gripped my phone tightly, considering calling Luc to confirm this was his plan.

“It’s fine. I assure you he knows.”

“Then you don’t mind if I call him.” I went to open my phone when my body froze as if my muscles had turned to stone. I willed my fingers to flex, but they held still, the circuits between my brain and body severed. Panic rose in my chest as my breathing labored. My eyes flicked wildly from my lap to the driver and back again.

“Relax, Eve. You’re safe for now. Although, I can’t assure your safety when we get where we’re going. We need your father to tell us what he knows about the Vatican.”

“Let me go.” My mouth still worked, although my jaw ached as I tried to move it.

“God, this is tedious.” Amadeus huffed, suddenly swinging the car against a curb and shutting it off. Before I knew what he was doing, I found myself standing in the middle of a warehouse. The room was vacant, all the equipment long removed, but a man in a black suit sat in a chair in the middle of the room.

He looked up slowly at our arrival, blood dripping from a huge cut running along the top of his head. When I recognized him, I gasped in surprise.

“Father Adams?” I wanted to look at Amadeus but couldn’t turn my head. My body was still frozen in place. “What the hell is going on?! Why have you kidnapped a priest, and why have you kidnapped me?” I struggled against the magic, willing my body to be stronger than the supernatural force even though it was unlikely.

I was exhausting myself with the exertion, so I tried something else. Amadeus had said he was here with my father. He’d obviously meant “father” in a Godly sense. But that meant Luc was here … somewhere.

“LUCIFER!”

Amadeus turned to me, and his annoyed glare revealed he hadn’t been sent for me.

“LUC—” My mouth sealed itself shut.

Amadeus sighed as he walked to the priest and grabbed his hair, yanking his head upright.

“So, a little birdie told us this is your daughter, Father. Is it true?”

I opened my mouth to say no. My father was an investment banker, but the priest’s eyes softened as he stared at me, and then slowly, horrifyingly, he nodded his head.

“So, you are capable of telling the truth.” Amadeus nodded, pleased with this information. He walked toward me. “I’m glad her presence loosens your tongue, but let’s really get the conversation rolling.”

He backhanded me suddenly, sending me sprawling to the floor. My mouth filled with blood, and I cried out in alarm. His fist wrapped around my long hair, pulling me to my feet, lifting me until my toes scraped against the concrete.

“How far do I have to go before you tell us what we want to know, Father?” Amadeus wrapped his hand around my throat, his fingers tightening until it felt like my airway was collapsing.

“I don’t know … I don’t know! I passed the information on to my bishop, who did the rest. Please, let her go. She’s an innocent.”

Amadeus laughed, reaching up to squeeze my cheeks together with his other hand and forcing my mouth to open. “But you’re not, are you, Eve? No, your sweet, innocent little girl is a whore for demons.” He slid a forefinger into my mouth, pressing it against my tongue. “I can smell the sex on her. You’ve been fucking my brother, Lucifer, haven’t you, sweet Eve?”

I attempted to reply, but it was gargled between his finger and my constricted airway.
