It was my turn to scream this time as I stumbled away, covering my mouth. I didn’t stop to see what happened as I ran, never looking back.

LUCIFER

Well,that was a terrible decision.

If I had taken the time to think about it, I probably would’ve realized that sooner. But it was too late as my thumb sunk into the man’s skull, and Eve ran off screaming. Dropping the body, uncaring whether he was alive or dead, I took off after her.

I was impressed. She was a quick little thing, but I was quicker. Reaching for her wrist, I spun her around.

Her hand beat against my chest. “Let me go! Monster! Monster!”

She was silenced with a snap of my fingers, even though her mouth continued to move. I couldn’t risk passersby overhearing her and coming to save the day.

My sweet Eve was safe with me, even if she didn’t think she was. I would never hurt her, nor would I let anyone hurt her. I needed her to realize that.

“Calm yourself,” I commanded. The energy bristled over her as she stilled in my arms. I didn’t want to overpower her will, but she left me with no choice. “Calm down. You’re safe. I won’t hurt you. You need to understand that man saw more of you than I can allow him to. Can you live with the knowledge that he saw what you were doing in the library?”

She stared at me, opening her mouth slowly, so I freed her tongue. “How did you know about that?”

“I know everything about you, Eve. It’s my job to take care of you and ensure no harm ever comes to you. You shouldn’t be ashamed of what you were doing, it’s only natural, but that man seeing it and having that kind of knowledge of you? I just can’t allow it.”

“Is he dead?”

I glanced over my shoulder where I left the body down the street. “I don’t know, and it doesn’t matter. He was nothing. He was no one. The only thing you have to worry about is yourself. I will do the rest.”

She was panting heavily from the exertion of running down the street. Her chest rose and fell, drawing my eyes to those luscious breasts.

“Who—” she began, “—what are you?”

I smiled, reaching out to tenderly brush my fingers down the side of her face. I moved the soft curl from her eyes, tucking it behind her ear. “I already told you. Don’t you remember?”

Her eyes fluttered as she recalled the evening before, the desire pooling in them at the memories. Her teeth gently scraped her bottom lip, and her nipples pebbled under her shirt. She might be afraid of me right now, but she still wanted me. That was good. That meant I still had a chance.

“Lucifer,” she whispered. “You asked me to call you Lucifer.”

My cock hardened in my pants, and I nodded my head. “That’s my name.”

She sucked in a short breath of realization, and her eyes widened. The look turned her into a startled doe. “It’s just a name, right?”

I laughed, unable to help myself. “If it’s not?”

“I…” She began, “I don’t know what to think. It seems so unbelievable.”

I nodded once more. “My understanding of you mortals is you are made to believe we are just creatures of fantasy. But, like you, we have mythologies and hierarchies. We just happen to be above humans. So, the truth of our existence is explained but simultaneously dismissed.”

She covered her mouth, processing what I was saying. As I waited, I sniffed the air. All that lingered were the remnants of her desire, not fear. Whatever she knew about—or of—me wasn’t enough to scare my little Eve into running.

“Why me?” she finally asked. “Is this a trick to corrupt me and steal my soul?”

I stepped closer to her, cupping her face and staring hard into her eyes so she knew what I was about to say was the honest to God truth. “Your corruption is the last thing I ever want. I would die before seeing any harm come to you by my hand, by the hands of my siblings, or anyone else who might think they could lift a finger against you.”

We stared at each other long and hard before she finally spoke again. “But that doesn’t answer my question. Why me?”

My thumb swept across her lips as I held her gaze, willing the words to come to me so I could explain exactly how I felt. “Because, my dear Eve, I have lived for millennia. I’ve seen many parts of this world and my own. I’ve met mortals and immortals, and none have enraptured me the way you do with just a smile.”

Despite the blood on my thumbs touching her perfect skin, she hadn't pulled away either. Either she hadn’t noticed, or her feelings for me, for what we did together yesterday, were so deep that she couldn’t be repulsed by me—by what I was.

“What happened to Duke?”
