"Hey. I'm at Micah's are you over here? I can't get the gate open."

"I'm not there, but I know the code."

"Eight, six, six, two," I said in a matter-of-fact tone.

"No, he had to change it while he was out of town. It's two, two, six, eight."

I punched in those numbers while I was still on the phone with Isaac.

"Thank you," I said when the gate began to open. "Congratulations, brother, I love you, and I can't wait for tomorrow. Ari's amazing."

"Thank you," he said. "Hey, uh, is, uh, Jake going with you to Micah's right now? Am I on speakerphone?"

"You are on speaker, but Jake's not with me. Why?"

"I was just wondering," Isaac said. "I didn't know how many people Micah was wanting to have over."

I could tell Isaac was trying to be nice and that he was also hoping Jake wasn't with me.

"We broke up," I said as I pulled into Micah's driveway.

"You, when, really? I didn't expect you to say that. Did you really?"

"Yes."

"Because he was acting like a dill-hole all night?"

I laughed a little as I replied. "Probably," I said, sounding vague. "I talked to him afterward and he was really jealous."

"Of Micah?" Isaac asked.

I experienced a sensation in my chest when my brother assumed he would be jealous of Micah. "Yeah. Of that guitar and all that."

"Did you fight about it?" he asked.

I remembered kicking him, and I smiled even though I knew I wouldn't mention it. I didn't care if my brother knew that I did that, but I didn't want to tell him that Jake squeezed my arm. I was too embarrassed about it.

"He was mad and it made me mad, too, and I was already not feeling it with him, so I just ended it. I didn't even intend to tell you that when I called. It's the night before your wedding, so you should be thinking about happy stuff. There will be one less guest at your wedding, though."

"I can't say as I am disappointed," Isaac said. "I'll support you in whatever makes you happy, you just didn't seem happy with that guy."

"Yeah, I… I kind of lost interest a few months ago, but he was so nice most of the time that I felt bad breaking…" I paused mid-sentence, but then continued. "I didn’t feel bad about it tonight, though. I feel good. It was definitely the right decision. Hey, I'm here, I'm headed inside. There's a couple of cars I don't recognize in his driveway."

"Yeah, Ryan was asking if he could invite some of his friends."

"All right, well, I'm going inside. Thanks for answering. I'm glad you knew that code."

"You're welcome, love you."

"Love you. See you tomorrow. Bye."

I hung up the phone and stashed it in my purse as I headed toward the house.

Micah's place was lovely. He had bought it a year earlier, and could probably afford something even nicer now that he had become a big star. But it was a gorgeous house and plenty to suit his needs. It was a grey stone and stucco exterior with a cobblestone driveway.

I walked around to the backyard because I figured that was where everyone was gathered. I came inside another iron gate and as I rounded a corner I could see that some people were swimming in his pool. It looked like Ryan and his friends—a few guys. There was another group of people closer to the house, sitting around on couches and chairs in a patio area.

"Hey look what the cat drug in," I heard my brother yell from the pool. I couldn't see him clearly, but I knew he was talking about me, and I smiled and waved in that direction.
