"Hey!" Micah said, from the table when he saw me. "I didn't know what Ryan was talking about with the cat."

Micah had a habit of only getting his hair cut once a year, so he looked different every time I saw him. Right now, it was longer and shaggy, and I liked it like that.

"Yeah, it drug me in," I said, smiling as I walked toward the outdoor table. Sitting there was Micah and my cousin, JD, along with JD's wife, Jordan. A couple of friends of the family were there too. Lila and Carson. They weren't a couple, but they were sitting on the same couch.

"Oh, hey," I said, when I came close enough to see them all. "I didn't know who all was coming over here."

Micah stood up. Everyone else stayed sitting since they all assumed I would sit with him, but Micah stood up and came over to me. He made a quick concerned expression before I hugged him.

"Are you okay?" he asked as we hugged.

"Yeah, why?"

"Because you already had a shower… and I thought you weren't coming."

"Oh, yeah, no, I just decided to come. I couldn't stand being at home knowing you guys were over here hanging out."

"There are drinks in the fridge if you're thirsty," he said, gesturing to the house.

I shook my head. "I’m fine, thank you, though." I set down my bag and kicked off my flats. There were multiple spots available for me to sit down, but I chose one close to where Micah was sitting. He went back over to his chair while I was getting situated. I took an empty spot on the end of the same couch where Jordan and JD were sitting.

I hugged Jordan once I sat down. I could still feel pain at the place on my arm, and again, I felt relieved that I made Jake leave. I played it off, smiling and acting like nothing was on my mind.

"Oh, there are other people here," I said noticing some girls come out of the house.

"Those are Ryan's friends," Micah said.

They were perfect bikini babes. They had their hair and makeup done and their sculpted, tan midriffs exposed gloriously. It seemed like they had been preparing for this pool party their whole lives.

"We all love your bathroom sooo much," one of them said in a valley girl accent. She was talking to Micah, and he responded to her, but I couldn't hear what he said because my cousin leaned over and spoke to me.

"Where's your boyfriend?" JD asked.

"He's not my boyfriend anymore," I said.

We were on the same couch and we spoke quietly enough that I knew no one else could hear us. I could vaguely hear Micah and those girls talking, but I couldn't tell what they were saying.

"What happened?" Jordan asked, looking concerned. I was trying to pay attention to the conversation, I really was. But those girls were now not-so-subtly begging Micah to get into the swimming pool with them.

"I'm good," he said, smiling and shaking his head. I only glanced at him for a second because Jordan was waiting for my reply.

"I broke up with him after we left the restaurant," I said quietly to her as I shook my head a little. "I had been thinking about it already. It was just time." I almost said more, but I decided to keep it simple.

"What happened?" Micah asked, from behind me. The girls could see that he was interested in our conversation, and they made their way toward the pool. "What happened?" he repeated, looking straight at me. "What did you say a minute ago?"

"She might not want to announce it," JD said.

"I don't care," I said. "It's not that big of a deal. I was telling them that me and Jake broke up a little while ago."

Micah made a surprised face, and I smiled a little and shrugged.

"He never was a good fit for you, anyway," JD said.

"Is this the one who was with you at the rehearsal dinner?" Lila asked.

I nodded in her direction. She had never met Jake before tonight.

"We never quite clicked," I said. "I liked him, and we dated, but it wasn't serious. I wasn't feeling it."
