"They were talking about how big his crowds were now since that Spiderman song came out."

I nodded, my heart still racing.

"I've heard it playing in three stores lately," Birdy said.

"That's amazing," my mom said, shaking her head.

I shrugged. "Well, in some ways, I'm sure it was better before that song came out and he got so famous. I bet there's something to be said for smaller venues."

My mom made a face for me to shush like she didn't want Micah to overhear me. But my thoughts we're in a different place. Thinking about his success made me feel guilty for falling in love with him. I didn't care about his fame. That was not a factor in all of this. If anything, I was jealous of all the female attention and I wished he wasn't as famous. I had basically said that to my mom, but thankfully I was vague enough and she misunderstood.

Micah reached out for me as he finished talking to my dad. I easily went to him, taking a step closer and reaching out, touching his arm, holding his hand.

"I hate to leave, but it's that time," he said.

"I'll walk you to your car when you go," I said.

"Okay," he said, nodding. "I'm ready."

Micah had a lot of goodbyes to say, and it took us another five minutes to get to the door. We behaved naturally. If it seemed like a good time to hold hands or make contact we would, and we also broke contact if needed. Our bodies, found each other constantly, though. We were holding hands as we walked out.

In the back of my mind, I knew my family would have questions when I came back, but I did not let that stop me. I had wasted enough time, and intended to waste no more of it.

Micah held the door open for me, and as I walked past him, I leaned up to put a kiss on his cheek. It was a last-minute decision, and I only let myself touch him for a second before continuing on like nothing had happened. My mouth was on his warm cheek just long enough to cause my chest to ache.

"Everyone saw that just now," he said, letting the door close behind him.

"Nu-uh, nobody's paying attention to us."

"What? Yes, they were. I looked back after you did that, and Birdy's jaw was on the floor."

"It was not," I said, laughing and shaking my head at him.

"It was. I promise. And everyone was already looking at us before you did that."

"Why, because I was holding your hand?"

"Yeah, you were holding my hand and you were looking at me."

"I look at you all the time," I said, taking his hand again.

Micah glanced over at me as we walked. "Not like this," he said.

"Where did you park?" I asked.

I didn't care. I was just trying to say something normal, something besides how much I loved him and how devastated I was that he was leaving.

"Right there," he said. Micah had a car and a truck, and he had come in his car. Both of them were nice and new but understated for how much money he made.

His car was a sleek grey Audi with a special sports engine. It had nice rims and tires and a stick shift. Micah enjoyed driving and he bought this car because it was fun for him. He got it a couple of years ago, and he tried to teach me how to drive a standard, but I didn't take to it. We walked up to it, and I put my hand on the back of it as he made his way to the driver's side. He didn't bother opening the door. He turned and leaned against the car.

I glanced back at the wedding venue, but our spot between cars felt mostly secluded. I was so happy that he didn't sit in his car, and I approached him, smiling. He took off his jacket, folded it over, and tossed it on top of his car. I watched in awe as he loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shirt. I felt warm and melty watching him do that, and I walked toward him and got situated next to him with my body close enough to touch his. I turned to lean against the car just like he was doing, letting my shoulder touch his.

I reached over and held his hand. I was nervous, but I saw the seconds leaving us as if they were the final few grains of sand in an hourglass.

"I'm sorry, Micah," I said.

"For what?"
