"Yes."

"You've done a lot today. You fit a lot in. You've traveled thousands of miles, written songs… what else did you do… you kissed someone."

"I did kiss someone," he said.

"I had to throw that in there," she said.

"Yeah, I know. You threw it right in."

"I had to make sure you remembered."

"I assure you, I won't forget."

"What do you think about hiking when you get back? Ari's brother was talking about wanting to go hiking while he was here, and he made me want to do it."

"Are you going with them?" Micah asked.

"Well, no, I mean, maybe. But I was mostly mentioning it because I wanted to go with you. I was going to try to plan stuff for when you come home."

"Yeah, I'm good with hiking," Micah said.

"What kind of song did you write?"

"It's called My Golden Angel."

"Oh, really?" she asked, sounding surprised.

"Yeah, and it's a hit."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it's the truth," he said. "When something's the truth, it resonates. It's one of those tunes that I can feel will be well received."

Micah didn't have to tell Claire that it was about her. She already knew.

Chapter 14

Claire Alexander

"Tennessee?" Birdy asked, looking at me from her place at the counter at Jimmy's. I had met her at the restaurant for lunch. "Why would you go all the way over to Tennessee? Isn't he coming home in a week or so?"

"Yes ma'am, he is, but I can't seem to wait that long."

"So, are you two—"

"Yes. We are."

"Your dad told me you were all bent out of shape over a man, and then he waited until the end of the conversation to tell me it was Micah."

Birdy was being quieter, more subdued than I thought she would be about it. I looked at her with a questioning expression.

"Didn't you see us at Isaac's wedding?"

"What happened at Isaac's wedding?" she asked.
