She was speaking to AJ because everyone else had on shoes.
"Speaking of hurting myself… did you know you have miles of veins running through your body?"
"Miles is putting it mildly," Beau said.
"How many miles is it?" AJ asked. "I think it's a lot." He looked at Beau.
"We took the same biology class," Beau said.
"I know. And I took it more recently than you."
"I know."
"How many miles is it?" AJ asked.
"Let us guess," Rose said. "Do you know for sure how much? Are you sure you remember right?"
"Yes, I learned it in science class," Beau said. "But we have phones in our pockets. We could always check Google. But I know how much it is."
"A thousand miles?" Rose asked.
Beau glanced at me and I shook my head a little, telling him I had no idea. I had never heard this fact before. I didn't know how much it was, but I thought it couldn't be more than a thousand.
"Is it more than that?" AJ asked.
"Way more," Beau said.
"No way," Hope said. "I used to work at a pediatrician's office, and I've never heard that."
"How long?" AJ asked. "You don't even know. I bet he's making this up."
"Yes, I do know. It's sixty-thousand."
"Miles? It is not," Rose said. "Are you sure?"
"I promise," Beau said. "But what does that have to do with anything, AJ?"
"I was thinking about it when I thought of slashing my foot open in the dark."
"Yeah, it's sixty-thousand," Beau said.
"Miles? Are you sure?" Rose asked, still sounding disbelieving. "How is that even possible? Are they microscopic?"
"Yes. Did you take biology?" Beau asked.
"I think so. But I don't remember learning sixty thousand miles. I thought your guts were really long."
"They're long for guts, but they're only like twenty feet," Beau said.
"Twenty feet is long for guts," AJ agreed. "But I didn't remember veins were tens of thousands of miles. It's crazy."
"Yes, it's crazy," Beau said.
"I wonder how many miles of veins dogs have," I said, looking at Ralphie as he ran ahead of us.
"Do bigger dogs have more miles of veins?" AJ asked. "Does Hank have more miles of veins than Ralphie?"
"I do not know the answer to that," Beau said. "You would think so, just based on size, but I don't know if proportionally they would have double."
