"I don't guess you're far enough in your relationship for you both to move here so you can work… your mom would probably kill me for even bringing up such a thing."

"Why would she kill you?" Beau said.

"I don't know. I’m not trying to rush things along with you and Holland." He put his hands up in a gesture of surrender. "Aunt Sarah and your mom would both have my hide if they knew I mentioned y'all moving in together. Don't tell either one of them I said that."

"It's not moving in together," Beau said. "It wouldn’t be like that. Even if we both lived here, we would be sleeping in totally different houses. I could stay in one of the guest houses, and she could stay where she is. And other people are always here."

"Would you even think about something like that with her?"

"Would you be willing to let her stay here? If she paid some rent?"

"Yeah, I mean, yeah, I would. I trust Holland, and honestly, I've enjoyed having her here."

Beau's heart rate spiked as he considered the possibility of staying in Arkansas longer than planned. He could get out of his lease, and he figured it wouldn't really be setting his career back.

"That's a lot of money, Uncle Max."

"I know. Your dad told me how much you were starting out at."

"And you're still asking me to do it?"

"It's important to me, and I like having you here. I didn't think about Holland going back to Chicago, honestly. I just got selfish in my thoughts and didn't even consider her."

"I'm definitely going to consider her when I think about it, but I don't look at it as us moving in together. My first thought is that I think it would be perfect. We need to talk about rent, though. That's something she'd have to think about on a practical level."

"Five hundred for her and… same for you."

"For a guest house?"

"Yes. Nobody else is in it."

"And a full-time job?"

"Oh, believe me, you'll have at least a full-time job with that building."

"I don't know what you do that you can pay me to… is it illegal?"

Max stared at his nephew. "No, it's not illegal."

"Am I allowed to ask other questions?"

"No, you're not," Max said.

"I… this is a lot to take in."

"I know it is," Max said, patting Beau's shoulder. "Think about it. I'm thinking it would be anywhere between a year and two years commitment."

"And then I can get a job from there," Beau said, thinking out loud.

"The offer is open," Max said. "Just let me know something in a couple of days. Maybe sleep on it before you even mention it to Holland."

Beau nodded, but he did not plan on waiting to mention it to her. In fact, he could not wait. They made their way inside, and by this time, the living room had cleared.

"Thank you, Uncle Max. I'm seriously thinking about this."

"You're welcome, and I hope you do think about it."

"I am. Did you tell my dad you're asking me?"
