And she was a good friend. He let out a sigh as he rubbed his chin. “Fine. Let’s go dancing.”

Constance

Constance’s vision blurred as she stared at her computer screen. The words went out of focus in front of her. She needed to sign up to receive her certification so she could continue on to the next phase of becoming a veterinarian.

Even though her relationship didn’t work out with James—for more reasons than one—she wasn’t going to lose everything she’d worked for to get where she was in her career.

There was only one problem.

Her heart didn’t agree.

Part of her was still holding onto the hope that she’d be able to have it all, even though she knew deep down that it wasn’t possible. There was a conflict warring within her. James and Brielle had lied to her—through omission—but it was still a lie. Every single excuse Brielle had made when it came to James only added to that lie.

Constance was still kicking herself for not realizing that James had something more than a little crush on Brielle back before she’d started dating him. Shoving those thoughts as far down as she could, Constance forced herself to focus on the computer screen again.

This used to be so much more exciting when she was doing it with James. Constance pushed away from the computer desk with a groan and got up.

“You know what we should do tonight?” Dianna’s voice filled the quiet room.

“Don’t you dare say we should go out—”

“We should go out.”

Constance shot Dianna a dark look.

“What? You’ve spent the last several months hanging out with James, and this is the first Friday where you can actually go out and have some fun.”

“I don’t need to have any fun. I need to figure out my schedule and how I’m going to survive work next week.” Constance fell back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling.

“You never went into work this week?”

Constance didn’t answer. Her sister already knew well enough that she hadn’t gone to work. She’d sulked in her room over the situation she’d brought on herself. It was ridiculous and stupid, but she hadn’t wanted to see James’s face at all, and she didn’t think she would be able to focus if they shared the same space.

Dianna moved on her bed, the shuffling sound the only thing Constance could hear until she settled on the edge of Constance’s bed. “Come on, Connie. You need to get out. I know you’re mad at Bri and all. And you don’t want to have to see James, but maybe after a cute cowboy swings you around the room a little, you’ll change your mind about your current predicament.”

Constance rolled her eyes. “I hardly think replacing James with someone different is going to fix mysituation.” A lump formed in her throat. She hadn’t told Dianna about the one thing that had weighed on her heart.

James had confessed that he loved her.

He was the only one who had ever told her that.

And now her heart was broken because she had to tell him she didn’t love himenoughto fight for him.

The worst part was that if he knew herrealreasons for the breakup, there wasn’t a doubt in her mind that he wouldn’t have let her leave. James was like that. He was the kind of guy who fought for what he wanted if he saw a glimmer of hope that he might get it.

Dianna scooted closer to Constance and nudged her playfully. “You know you don’t want to stay here all alone.”

“I won’t bealone,” she muttered. “Did you forget that we have younger sisters?”

“But they won’t help keep your mind off of—you know who.”

Constance groaned. “Are you seriously going to make this a big deal? Because it isn’t. It’s been a week. I’m over it.” She chanced a look in Dianna’s direction which was a big mistake. Her younger sister’s expression was one of disdain. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“For the record, no one expects you to be over him. He was your first love.”

Constance huffed. “How could he be considered my first love if I never told him I loved him?” She grimaced and hoped her sister didn’t catch her in her lie. Shehadadmitted to loving him, but she’d said it just as she left and when she’d cut ties with him. Did it even count?
