Dianna nudged her again. “It doesn’t matter what you said or didn’t say. Just come with me to the country club and keep me company.”

She shut her eyes tight and let out a sigh. What were the chances that James would be there? Shane was his friend. He could be visiting for that reason alone. But knowing James, he would be in the clinic catching up on work. It wasn’t hard to convince him not to take her there. They both seemed to prefer the company of each other out in nature.

Her heart twisted inside out and she let out another groan. “How long are you going to want to stay?”

“I dunno. How about we get out there and then decide. You might find out that there’s someone who is more interesting to visit with.”

Constance opened her eyes and craned her neck around to glance up at her sister. “I doubt that. I don’t need someonenew. The only thing you said that made sense was that I needed to get my mind off things. So I guess I’ll tag along for a little bit. But the second—and I mean the second—someone hits on me, I’m leaving. You can come with me, or you can get a ride home with someone else.”

Her sister snickered. “Don’t be ridiculous. If someone hits on you, I’m going to be right there to tell you to go for it.”

“Dianna! I don’t—”

“What will one kiss hurt? Seriously, I don’t understand why you’re so against moving on.”

Constance’s eyes narrowed. “Weren’t you the one who said that dating was a bad idea? I seem to recall something about not wanting to break Daddy’s rules.”

“Dating, yes. But an innocent kiss?” She shrugged. “I’ve gotten a kiss or two at the end of the dates I’ve been on. But I won’t be caught in a serious relationship. Those just cause trouble.”

Eyes growing wide, Constance let out the first small laugh she could remember uttering since she’d last seen James. “Dianna! You’re joking, right?”

She shrugged and gave Constance a wry smile. “There aresomethings I prefer to keep to myself.” Dianna scooted off the edge of the bed and turned around to hold out her hands toward Constance. “Let’s go. It’ll be fun.”

Constance sat up on her elbows and stared at her sister with a wry grin. “I highly doubt that.”

The musicin the country club flowed through the people dancing and visiting within the whole building. Constance found a sofa to sit on and held her glass of Coke in both of her hands. She didn’t focus on anyone in particular, and Dianna had split the second they’d arrived.

It was nice to be out of the house, but being at one of the places where Constance spent more time with James while working wasn’t actually helping her mental state.

She curled her legs up beneath her and pulled out her phone, praying the gesture would be enough to keep anyone from coming over and talking to her. Music could flood her senses enough to drown out the people and she could just get some peace from her overactive brain.

About thirty minutes later, the cushion beside her compressed as Dianna settled onto the sofa next to her. “Why aren’t you out there dancing? I thought you said you’d come to have fun.”

Constance waved her phone around and forced a grin. “I’m having the perfect amount of fun right now. I promise.”

Dianna’s cheeks were flushed from the amount of dancing she’d already participated in. Most of the songs had been upbeat—not the kind she’d spend with a partner. Currently the slow song had forced people to couple up and get close. Constance’s eyes narrowed and her grin widened.

“You know what I think?”

“What’s that?” Dianna’s gaze swept through the room as she settled back against the couch.

“I think that you’re full of hot air.”

Dianna laughed and fanned her face with her hand. “I do feel a little over-heated. Do you want to go outside and get some fresh air?”

“No. I mean you’re a liar.”

This time Dianna glanced in Constance’s direction. “That’s not a very nice thing to say. Besides, I’m not the one who was lying about my relationship.” Her tone remained lighthearted and the smile behind her eyes confirmed she wasn’t offended in the slightest.

“What I mean is that I don’t think you’ve ever kissed a guy.”

Dianna tossed her head back and laughed. “Okay. You got me.”

Constance let out a loud laugh, drawing the attention of some of the closer couples. “I knew it wasn’t in your character to go kissing random guys. You’re too much of a rule follower and too much of a romantic.”

Her younger sister shrugged. “I had to get you out here somehow. I didn’t think you’d come if I told you that I just wanted to dance.” She elbowed Constance in the side. “The next song, you should come out with me.”
