Yavich nodded to my brother.

My demeanor darkened. “Life lied. She or Aaron stole Yavich from Zhaine and Onyx. Life is working with the Mindolin.”

“I feared as much with what Bard was saying.” Carmon pushed himself to his feet.

A part of me didn’t want to admit I’d also had the same fear. If Life could have stopped the Mindolin from taking over Bard’s Forest, then why hadn’t she? The answer should have been obvious right away, but I’d been hoping for the best.

“So what do we do now?” Sylee took Carmon’s hand and he squeezed it. “Life is the most powerful being on the planet, right? What can we do to stop her?”

Cal looked at Zhaine, who grunted.

“Don’t look at me. I haven’t the foggiest idea.” Lord Lightning crossed his arms over his chest. “I’ve lived my life under the sole of that woman’s foot. We all trusted her to lead us and this world through peace.”

“What I don’t get,” Sylee dragged her free hand, the one Cal wasn’t holding, through her hair, “is why Life said you guys had to have mates to beat the Mindolin. I mean, yeah, we Ladies have power and now we can all talk to each other over the links, but I don’t see her wanting us to win.”

Yavich shook his head beside me. “She doesn’t, and none of you guys needed mates to defeat Aaron.”

“What do you mean, we didn’t need mates?” Dalton’s voice rose until the girl wiggled in his arms. When she quieted, he addressed the Demon more quietly. “Why make us find mates, then?”

“To weaken and distract you.” Yavich said it like the idea should have been obvious.

Jeff waved from his place on the ground. Sophie held one hand while Tessa held his other. The blonde healer had her work cut out for her. Jeff looked a mess, probably the worst of all my siblings.

“I get the distraction part,” Jeff said. “Give us a complicated job like falling in love and bonding, and it’ll give you the distraction you need. However, I don’t understand the weakening part.”

Jazz gave a heavy sigh. “I do. Marcus helped me understand it.” She held a baby in her arms, and she leaned against Drew, who held two of their triplets. “Life not only distracted you by ordering you to find mates, but she gave you someone you care about more than yourself. Someone you would do anything to save, even give up your own life for. If she catches any of us Ladies, she’ll take down her mate with ease.”

I pulled Brynn closer to me. Jazz was right. If Life stole Brynn from me, I’d give anything, even my life, to save my mate.

Don’t sacrifice yourself for me.Brynn’s plea was quiet in my head, but also demanding.Don’t give her what she wants.

I would do anything to protect you.I kissed the top of her dirty head.

You are a frustrating man.She held me tighter as I gave a silent chuckle.

It’s why you love me.

Brynn didn’t deny it.

“So what are—" Jazz yipped and cut off her question as Marcus appeared, two large bodies draped over his shoulders.

When he dropped the men, he exposed their faces. Leo, Lord Fire, and Alex, Lord Healing, lay on the ground at the Earth Lord’s feet. Marcus’ face was riddled with rage. If he’d been a Fire Lord like me, he would have ignited us all with his anger.

“She is a traitor and a backstabber—" Marcus began his tirade, but Lightning cut him off.

“Yes, yes, we know, brother. Tell us something new.”

Marcus’ teeth ground together. “Where are the Ladies? Love, Air, and Water?”

“No idea.”

Marcus stood to his full height as if to intimidate his brother. We didn’t have time for their egos.

“Stop.” I released Brynn and pushed her to the side, closer to Yavich. If he betrayed me now by hurting her, I’d kill him, and this time he’d stay dead. Marcus and Zhaine looked at me. I’d thrown Elemental power behind my command. I was mortal, but my element still outranked theirs. They had to listen. “Lightning, we need your mate here.”

Zhaine shook his head. “She is tied to her pool.”

“And who told her that?”
