Elementals were possessive of their mates and their privacy. Drew had given a lot to allow us to sleep in the same bed he shared with his mate.

Drew looked up at me. His face was strained. If you’d seen what we did after the Mindolin died, you’d know I didn’t have much of a choice. We thought Brynn was okay because she was alive. No one realized you were both dying until Jeff started barking orders. I’m sorry. We all thought she’d passed out.

You all saved us. There’s nothing to apologize for. Alex should have clarified her condition when he announced Brynn was alive.Alex had never been one to over share when it came to our health.

Drew looked grim.Alex isn’t bouncing back well from whatever Life did to him and Leo. Can’t say I’m too upset about it as far as Alex as a person goes, but we could use another healer on his game. Right now, Sophie is our top healer. Jeff is making his way to a full recovery thanks to her and Nate, but the creatures tore him apart pretty good.

Cal’s still out,I informed Drew.

My large brother nodded. Dalton had taken the hint that the two of us were talking but said nothing as he continued to bounce his son. He was used to our team leadership speaking and not being included in that. But why couldn’t he be?

How are your kids doing, Dalt?

My Air Elemental brother seemed a bit taken aback by being included in our conversation. Drew didn’t seem the least bit surprised.

Lacey is scared but is getting better. Brady checks out fine with the healers. They’ll get through this okay. Once Lacey knows she’s safe, she’ll relax.Determination set into Dalt’s jaw. He’d make this world safe for Lacey. Even if it killed him.

Go check on your mate,Drew ordered. You might be the man in charge since Cal’s out, but as your second in command, I’m taking you out of duty right now and taking it on myself. Chris, get him to Brynn.

Not that I have any say,Dalt followed up,but I’m in agreement with Drew. We have this. It has to be killing you to not see her.

It was, but I needed to know my brothers and their families were okay too before my mate took over all my attention.

Chris didn’t need to point me to my old room here in Drew’s house. I knew the room. The door opened without a sound. Sophie sat, asleep, in a chair by the bed. Tessa lay asleep next to Brynn, cuddling my mate from on top of the blanket laid over Brynn.

“Where’s Jeff?”

“His room,” Chris answered. “I’ll help Tessa there and come back for Sophie.”

I wanted to take Tessa to her room. It was the least I could do for her service to my family, but I’d drop her. Chris could handle this for me, and I’d pay Tessa back some other way.

Chris didn’t take long to walk Tessa to her room. I at least opened the door for him so he didn’t struggle with our sister in his arms. Sophie was still with Brynn. I could wait another minute to hold her.

When Chris left with Sophie in his arms, I about ran and jumped on the bed to check on my wife. In the light from the rest of the house through the once-open door, she’d looked pale. Her hair was tangle free and her skin cleaned. Chris said the girls had bathed her in warm water. They’d also taken care to clean her and brush her long hair.

After stripping from my clothes again, I crawled under the comforter with Brynn to keep her warm. I didn’t have to worry, though. They’d put an electric blanket over her. I moaned in pleasure at the heat. My brothers had done the job of warming me in an emergency while the others took care of Brynn, but the blanket and my mate did even better. At this point, Brynn was warmer than me.

“Adam?” Her voice was tired and weak, but it was the best sound I’d ever heard.

“I’m here, baby. I’m here.”

The bed was only a full, so the two of us took up the entire thing. Not that I complained about having to sleep with Brynn in my arms. I wanted nothing more.

Sensing my need to hold her, Brynn rolled over and laid her head on my chest. “I thought I was about to die. Leo did.”

I rubbed my hands over her arms in a gesture of comfort. “I know. I thought I was going to lose you.”

“What did you do?”

“I lay down with you and tried to warm you with the little heat I had left. If my family hadn’t been there, we’d have left this world together last night. Considering I don’t want to live a day without you, it was the preferable way to go.” She opened her mouth to speak again, but I cut her off while rubbing her back. “Rest, baby. The Mindolin is dead, but we still have to stop Life.”

Brynn’s warmth and the blanket lulled me back to sleep. The door opened and closed a few times when people came to check on us, and I cracked my eyelids open to see who’d come and make sure Brynn was safe. Then, I’d close my eyes and be asleep again before the person even left.

Alex, Nate, and Sophie all pressed their hands to my wrist, checking my vitals. Sophie even helped Brynn to the bathroom when she became wobbly on her feet.

Another knock came to our door when I’d finally risen and dressed. I could’ve used a shower, but my stomach had been empty for too long.

I looked over at Brynn. Someone had found clothes that fit my wife. I didn’t know where, but I was grateful. She’d still been wearing my oversized clothes in the field outside the forest.
