“Of course she did,” Cal breathed out and rubbed his face. “She always said we weren’t immortal because our father wasn’t. However, that’s not true. Aaron was immortal when we were conceived.”

Lilith rose and began to pace. The Love Elemental had never been so mad before. “She told us since Aaron was once human, you would be mortal. My daughters were mortal, so we expected the same for you boys. Under our beliefs that Luka was dead, there was no way to know that he was immortal. He was supposed to be dead, so we assumed he was mortal. I guess Life is the one who decides who is mortal and who isn’t.”

“That’s a lot of power for one person,” Carmon commented.

“You hold the same powers she does now,” Marcus said. “She did that to overwhelm you, and it worked. You’re stronger than she thinks, though. I’d bet she still expects you to be down. So, Lord Carmon, dig into that power of yours and see what you find. Don’t fear it. Rule it.”

Carmon looked uncertain, but he tried to hide the expression. He did a bad job, but no one said anything when Carmon failed. He’d expected people to criticize him. The expectation was written in the eyes observing his uncles. The fact no one spoke up when he was weak surprised him. His eyebrows rose, and he looked around again. Then, his jaw clenched, and he closed his eyes.

Adam rose and went to stand beside Carmon, protecting his brother while he was at a disadvantage with his lack of sight. Pride radiated from my chest. This was the man I’d always pictured Adam to be when he spoke of being a Lieutenant to his brother.

“What am I looking for?” Carmon asked.

“Immortality for you, your brothers, and your mates.” The really big Earth Lord also stood and began to pace like the beautiful woman had done. Love, maybe? “To beat Life, you’ll need to be immortal.” He sighed. “You’ll probably need a power boost as well. When you figure out how to change your mortality to immortality, let me know. I’ll give you mine.”

Carmon’s eyes flew open. “Your what?”

“My immortality.” Marcus looked grim. “You boys and your girls have a full set of elements. Leo’s dead. Who knows where your mother is. Life is a traitor. We have five elements left and two Lower Elementals that don’t have full Elemental power like the twelve of you do. Even Aaron didn’t have full Water Elemental powers.”

“He’s right,” Alex grumbled, looking completely irritated he had to admit either that his brother was right or that his nephews were in a better position to win this war. “As much as it pains me, if I had my immortality still, I’d give it up. However, it’s the thought that counts.”

Drew rolled his eyes from where the Healing Elemental couldn’t see. I only remembered he was Healing because he wore the healing color of red.

“You can have my immortality,” The redheaded Lady Air volunteered. Olivia should never be made to look so angry. Her soft features were made for smiles.

“You can have mine,” Luka spoked up next. “I haven’t used it for good, so I don’t deserve to have it.”

“My immortality and Love’s are yours.” An old man looked fondly at the boys. “I am very proud of the six of you.”

Adam smiled while Carmon still stood with his eyes closed. “Thanks, Bard.”

Bard? As in Bard’s Forest?

“Our immortality is yours as well.” Zhaine and Onyx took each other’s hands.

“I don’t need all of that to give my brothers and sisters immortality,” Carmon said, remaining still. “However, I’m taking Life’s immortality from her, and I’ll need it for that. No one put that through a link. Life’s monitoring the links, but she doesn’t know I’ve discovered that.”

“So, we set a trap for her.” Marcus looked giddy with excitement.

Carmon opened his eyes and nodded. “Keep talking through the links. Don’t act different, but don’t share anything important. Ask questions such as ‘Where’s the mustard?’ or something benign like that. Once we’re ready, Life will know.”

Who wants donuts?Dalton’s sure, confident voice came through the link in my head. How could his voice not waver or give any sign of distress?

Not if you’re making them.Drew’s voice laughed, but he stood stoically beside me.

Naw, I’m picking them up from Mona’s.

You were supposed to come straight home. Are you insane? Life is still out there looking for us, and you’re putting yourself and Grace in danger.Carmon also stood in our circle. His voice came off gruff, as it was supposed to, but how much of it also happened from nerves? We were acting out his plan, and many lives depended on that plan working. I’d be a basket case if our roles were reversed.

As it was, I only had to hold Adam and Drew’s hands.

Dalton had volunteered himself for the job of being bait for Lady Life. Grace had gone with him. Lord Healing, Alex, had put Lacey into a relaxing healing sleep. She’d wake up when this was all over, and Grace and Dalton would cuddle her and Brady until the end of time.

I thought a nice treat for everyone while you’re keeping us cooped up would be a nice idea, Cal. I’m sorry you think we’re not going insane. If no one else wants donuts, that’s fine. We’ll grab some for us alone.Dalton closed his link in the act of throwing a tantrum, but Grace kept hers open.

The circle tensed. We were counting on Life taking the bait. She had to take the bite.

Five seconds. Ten. Fifteen.
