I felt like chucking my phone into the nearest wall. “Why not? What other use do I have in life than to either be someone’s wife or someone else’s mother. Preferably both and preferably before I grow too many brains to fight back.”

“Too many brains?” Florence asked gently.

“Everyone knows that once a woman hits her mid-twenties, she becomes an argumentative shrew.”

“Have you been binging Regencies again?” she asked kindly.

I huffed. “I honestly wonder sometimes if anything’s actually changed for women.”

“I hear tell that outside the ridiculousness of far too much money, and in normal human society, girls get to choose who they marry, and evenifthey marry. They’re also allowed to go to uni and get jobs and have pursuits that are not limited to throwing successful parties, keeping up with the latest fashions, and pumping out male heirs.”

“Fiction, surely.”

She gave me a smile and I found a small one to give back.

“Who knows,” I said. “Maybe Apollo’s going to sweep me off my feet?”

Florence nodded. “A few months ago, I’d have said there wasn’t a chance in Hell. But now, even I can see the possibility.”

I snorted as I started typing out a reply to Exie. “Coming from you, that means a lot.”

Harlow

Neither. There are no rings, secret or otherwise, and defs no babies.

I sighed. “Well, if I’ve got any hope of Apollo sweeping me off my feet, then I need to eliminate every potential competitor. And if I’m fucking Valen out of my system tomorrow night, then you get to help me choose what I’m going to wear.”

“Oh, sexy fashion parade?” Florence asked excitedly.

I laughed. “Sure. Sexy fashion parade.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

“I cannot believe I’m doing this,” I muttered as I finished applying my makeup in the mirror. “I must be insane.” I gave my hair one more fluff, like that was going to do anything to calm the nerves racing around my body.

“Insanity would be passing up what is being freely offered,” Florence said from our room.

“I don’t know about that,” I said as I walked back out of the bathroom.

Florence’s jaw dropped. “Fuuuck,” she breathed.

I did a dorky little turn. “All right?” I asked.

She nodded eagerly, then shrugged coyly. “If you like that sort of thing.” Then she smirked at me knowingly. “He’s gonna love it.”

“I don’t even know why I let you talk me into buying it.”

She indicated me. “For this exact reason.”

“This reason wasn’t a reason when I bought it,” I reminded her.

“But it is now,” she reminded me.

I rolled my eyes. “Well, at least it’s getting some use.”

She laughed. “Go and seduce your man.”

“He’s not my man,” I told her. “I hate him.”
