I took a swig of water and stretched my neck.

Then, suddenly Valen had put something around it. Something light and warm. I looked down and saw a cross sitting slightly lower on my naked chest than the one I always wore. My fingers touched it gently as I felt Valen doing it up at the nape of my neck.

“What’s this?” I asked him.

He kissed the side of my neck. “That would be my cross.”

“Why is it your cross?”

“Because my mother gave it to me for my confirmation.”

I couldn’t stop touching it, my eyes glued to it with an emotion I didn’t think I could name had I wanted to. “No. Why is it your cross around my neck?”

“Because,” he said as he trailed lazy kisses over my neck, “he might own you, but your body is mine. This might be goodbye, but I’ll know you were mine first.”

First.

Because Apollo would claim me one day. Whether soon or not. The day was coming.

“And I suppose you expect me to wear it all the time?”

I felt him nod. “You will not like what I do to you if you take it off.”

The gentleness of his touch belied his words, but I knew not to push Valen Kincaid too far.

“I can’t wear two crosses, Valen. Someone will notice.”

He raised his head and I felt his fingers at the clasps of the necklaces. He undid mine and lifted it off me. I swivelled and held my hand out to take it from him, but he shook his head.

“You’re not throwing that out,” I told him.

He shook his head again. “No.”

I watched, slightly mesmerised as he undid the cuff on his left wrist, wrapped my chain around it, did it back up, and slipped the cuff back over the top.

“Now, we’ll both have a secret,” he said.

I looked down at his cross nestled, alone now, on my chest. “I thought we already did.”

His finger went to my chin and tipped my face to look at him. “Ah, but this ends when you walk out of my room. Fucked out of your system. After that, no more secret.”

I didn’t like the way he said that. I didn’t like the sound of that. His voice was hard, his eyes were inscrutable. I neither understood nor wanted to understand the message in them.

“Well, I’m still here, so I guess the job’s not quite done,” I told him.

He almost looked thankful. I nearly believed he didn’t want me to leave either. “Do you want another secret?” he asked.

I bit my lip, wondering what on Earth he could mean. Nothing that my heart should flutter over, I was sure, but it did that anyway. I nodded as I steadied my breath. “Sure.”

He slid off the bed and settled between my legs. His hand lay over my breast and squeezed it hard as his other ran up my leg. I looked down at him, not sure where this was going or how this counted as a secret.

Valen pressed a soft kiss between my breasts, just below his cross. As his lips headed south, he coaxed me to lie down on the bed. He sucked my clit gently before slowly dragging his tongue over me.

“I’ve been undone for you since the day I met you,” he said quietly, reverently, his lips fluttering against my clit as my heart stuttered in my chest.

I tried to sit up, but his hand held me against the bed firmly.

“Valen–”
