Valen looked at me like I was less than a bug on the bottom of his shoe. “You brought her here, why can’t you?”
“Because I’m asking you.”
Valen’s lip rippled with a barely repressed snarl. “I’m busy, do it yourself.”
Apollo frowned at Valen, and I didn’t blame him. Valen had never outright said no to Apollo for anything. Valen was known to avoid me at the best of times, but this was something else.
“Yeah, all right...” Apollo said slowly, not sounding pleased but not arguing.
“It’s fine,” I said. “I’m a big girl, I can walk myself.”
“You sure?”
“What other option is there?” I asked.
If Apollo realised I was giving him a chance to step up, he didn’t take it. Instead, he nodded.
“Okay, good.”
“If you don’t need me...” Valen said pointedly.
Apollo shook his head and Valen stalked out.
“Good night,” I said to Apollo, walking out before he had a chance to reply. It didn’t take a genius to notice he didn’t follow me.
“Oi!” I hissed at Valen once Apollo’s door was closed behind me.
Valen just growled and headed for the stairs. I ran to keep up with him through the darkened halls.
“Fine!” I snapped. “I guess I’ll just see if Arnie Brickworth’s still awake!”
Okay, I’d wanted a rise out of him, but that may have been taking it too far.
Valen whirled on me and shoved me back against the wall. His face was dark and thunderous. His jaw clenched and he was breathing heavily.
“You go back to your room,” he ordered.
This wasn’t the party in the woods. There was no hidden meaning. There was no necessity. He just wanted to order me around for the sake of being bossy.
“Are you going back to yours?” I countered.
He huffed. “I don’t answer to you, princess.”
“So it seems. You don’t answer to me. You don’t talk to me. You don’t even look at me if you don’t have to.”
“I hate you,” he seethed.
“Is that all?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you could hate me and still want me.”
“Not anymore.”
I couldn’t pretend that didn’t hurt. “Why?”
“Because I have to.”
