“Why now? What’s changed since last week?”

Last week, when it felt like we were the only two people in the world who could give each other exactly what the other one needed.

“God’s woken up, princess. He finally realises what he has.” He looked me over. “How happy you must be. You’ve finally got what you always wanted. God’s attention.”

I shoved against him. He swayed away for good measure, but as he swayed back he came closer. His hand went to my hip. The flutter in my stomach didn’t stop me feeling angry with him.

“Of course. Because you know what I’ve always wanted,” I said sarcastically.

There was a wicked gleam in his eye and a cheeky tilt to the corner of his lips. “I know plenty about what you want, princess.” His nose dropped to my ear and my heart stuttered to life. “I feel very confident in saying I know exactly what you want...given how easily you melt for me...”

“Ugh!” I pushed against him again, but he didn’t move. “Well, clearly God has some learning to do if he’s still wetting his cock in any idiot who’ll spread her legs for him.”

“Why should I give a fuck who he sticks it in?”

“I don’t know, Valen,” I sassed. “Why should you? You’re only avoiding me because of him.”

He snarled. “I don’t expect you to understand.”

I was tired. I was upset. I was angry.

Here these boys were, dictating my life. Again. They got to do whatever they wanted while I was denied one simple thing I wanted. It was one thing. Was it really so much to ask to have one thing for myself?

“No, Valen,” I said quietly. “No. I don’t understand. I don’t understand why Apollo gets to fuck around with as many girls as he wants and I... I can’t have the one man – theoneman – I want.”

When I shoved against him this time, he didn’t hold his ground. He stumbled backwards like I’d actually surprised him for once. But, I didn’t care. I’d said too much.

Idiot.

I ran out of the boys’ dorm, tears hot in my eyes. It wasn’t fair. None of it. And I didn’t know what they wanted from me.

Apollo had spent the night like it was a date, like maybe we were making progress. Whatever that meant. Florence had been right when she’d said he was being more attentive. Valen was certainly right when he pointed out I had Apollo’s attention. And yet he still kicked me out for a Magdalen? To add insult to injury, Valen wasn’t going near me because he thought Apollo had suddenly decided to claim me?

I wasn’t standing for it.

When I got back to our room, Florence was still awake.

“How did it...?” Her question died on her lips as she took in my face. “What?”

“Those boys are going to pay,” I said, my voice like acid.

“Okay. Loving it. Why?”

I closed our door behind me and felt my teeth grinding.

“Apollo had the audacity – thefuckingaudacity, Florence – to kick me out so he could have a Magdalen visit.”

“He didn’t!”

“He did.”

“Arsehole.”

I nodded. “Yes.”

“And the other one?”

“He apparentlyonlyhates me, because he has to now that Apollo’s paying attention.”
