“You are bleeding a lot.”

“I am bleeding a lot,” he agreed.

We got him into the backseat of the car with one more shot fired behind us in answer to one that sailed past my head alarmingly close. As I climbed through to the driver’s seat, my desire to not be outside the car longer than necessary was fully justified as a bullet hit the back of the car.

“Go!” Marco shouted.

I scrambled to get the seat in some semblance of usable to me and peeled out of the park with squealing rubber.

“Valen’s going to kill me,” I muttered. “He’s going to actually kill me.”

“We’re coming in hot,” Marco said.

I flicked my eyes to the rear-view mirror and saw the glow of a phone. I didn’t know who he was talking to.

“Come alone. Just you, Valk.” A pause. “Blood loss. Barely conscious. Gonna need a fuck tonne of stitches. The Viper’s got a bullet hole in it. But the missus did get a nice new dress.”

I careened up the hill, taking the twists and turns far too quickly, but thankful at each one that my father had insisted not only that I learn to drive auto and manual cars, but also that I take that defensive driving course. It had been more like a stunt driving course in disguise, but it was serving me well just then.

Marco had been silent too long.

“You still with me?” I asked.

“Yeah. Just. Valk’s gonna meet us... Garage...”

“Shit sticks,” I muttered as I slammed my foot to the accelerator.

The car leaped through the Saint Benedicts front gates and fought for traction on the gravel drive. I almost lost control but managed to spin the car to a stop just outside the boys’ garage. I saw a figure run towards us as I climbed out. I recognised Valen’s figure instantly. Part of me wanted to run to him and throw myself in his arms and make him tell me everything was going to be okay, but I had to get Marco some serious help.

Valen paused when he saw me, then was running faster. As I went to open the back door to get Marco out, Valen’s hand closed on my arm and whirled me to face him.

“Where are you hurt? Where’s Marco?”

I batted him away, but he clung to me. “I just scraped my knee. Marco’s the one who needs stitches.”

“This isn’t your blood?” His hands roved over me professionally, like he was looking for wounds.

I shook my head. “No.”

“Fuck,” he breathed, and it sounded all relief.

For a moment, I thought he was going to pull me to him and kiss me. For a moment, I think he thought he was going to as well. But he didn’t.

“Marco’s in the back,” I told him.

Valen wrenched the back door open and exclaimed at the sight that greeted him. “Fucking hell!”

Marco gave him a bloody grin. “Just you wait til you see the bullet hole.”

“What the fuck happened?” Valen demanded.

“The spineless fucking Black Bloods came sniffing around for more retribution. Thought picking a fight with one of God’s Angels would be funny.”

“I thought we dealt with them?” Valen said.

Marco’s already glassy gaze flickered to me.

“What?” Valen asked.
