“They’ll have put a target on Miss Vanguard’s back.”

“How? They wouldn’t recognise her.”

“It’s my fault,” Marco said.

“No,” I told them both. “I’m the one who outed me.”

“They said if God fucks them again, then they’re coming for her first.”

“Fuck!” Valen grunted, slamming his hand on the car door. “I leave you alone for five fucking seconds and you go and get a target on your back! And the fucking Black Bloods? I might never let you out of my sight again!”

He finished his tirade inches from me, his chest rising and falling rapidly. Mine was skipping and tripping and not at all sure how to take his words.

“Be more careful,” he ordered.

“Or what, Valen?” I asked.

“Or I will never leave your side.”

How did he make that sound so delicious but so threatening at the same time? His tone suggested I wouldn’t enjoy it, history suggested I very much would.

“As impressive as your protective streak is,” I said sarcastically, “Marco need serious medical attention.”

Valen took a deep, steadying breath. “You mention this to no one. Not even Florence. Especially not Apollo.”

“Why especially not Apollo?”

“Because the ijit would use it as an excuse to provoke the Black Bloods,” Marco wheezed.

“Instead of heeding the warning,” Valen finished for him.

“What am I supposed to do now?” I asked.

“Go back to your room and go to bed.”

I looked at Valen. “Seriously?”

“And you do not leave school grounds without me or Marco.” Valen looked to Marco. “You’re gonna have to earn that double time now.”

“I know. Now can we fucking get on before all me wounds clot and close by themselves?”

As Valen went to help Marco out of the car, I lay a hand on his arm. He looked at me quizzically.

“Floss is away. I don’t... I don’t think I should be alone tonight...”

Valen either refused under the circumstances to or just didn’t see anything sexual in that. He nodded.

“I’ll get Marco to the doctor, give you time to clean up, then come and check on you.”

I nodded. “Thanks.”

I hurried to my room, thankfully seeing no one to comment on my blood-soaked appearance. The back of my neck prickled like I was being watched or followed, but I forced myself to believe it was just my heightened nerves.

I was just climbing into bed, clean and changed, when there was a knock on the door. My heart tried leaping out of my mouth, but the familiar if stern face of Valen appeared around it and my heart settled in place once more.

“You decent?” he asked, coming into the room and closing and locking the door behind him.

“More decent than the last time we were locked in a room together. If that’s what you’re asking?”
