“Sorry I’m late,” he murmured just for me, his lips lingering near my ear as his nose pushed into my hair. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.”

“Not at all,” I assured him. “But I’m glad you’re here.”

As he turned to acknowledge the friends I’d been talking to, Donal’s hand smoothed up the back of my dress until his fingertips found bare skin at the top of my zipper.

“Sorry guys, but right now I have to borrow Tess so we can dance to this song.” His gaze homed in on me again, his eyebrows rising slightly. “If that’s okay with you?”

“Of course.”

With a hand on the back of my neck, he steered me away from the group, relieving me of my empty glass and depositing it on a table on our way to the dance floor. As soon as we got there, his arms wound around me, and I clasped my hands behind his neck as he tugged my hips flush against his.

“Careful,” I murmured as I turned my face up to his. “People will think we’re a couple.”

“I fucking hope so.” One hand slipped down to boldly squeeze my ass as we swayed to the music. “This is my do-over, remember? I want the whole school to know we’re together.”

“If you’re planning to ask me to homecoming, the answer is no. One high school dance per decade is all I can handle these days.”

His smile was as brilliant as the disco ball throwing off glints of light around the room. “You’re saying I shouldn’t get my hopes up for the Sadie Hawkins?”

I smiled back, my chest filling up with a loose, easy feeling I was still getting used to but knew now was happiness. “I still can’t believe you actually wanted to be my boyfriend back in high school.”

“What did you think I gave you that mixtape for? I wasn’t exactly being subtle.”

“I always thought you didn’t want a serious girlfriend.”

“I didn’t want anyoneelsefor a serious girlfriend because I was completely hung up on you. No other girl could compare.”

“And yet you said nothing.”

“I gave you a mixtape of love songs, woman.”

My smile turned teasing. “Does Bon Jovi’s ‘Bad Medicine’ really count as a love song?”

“Hell yes. That song is seriously fucking romantic.”

“‘She Drives Me Crazy’ by Fine Young Cannibals? That one feels like an insult.”

He grinned. “You did drive me crazy. Still do.”

“And that Def Leppard song with the music video about the serial killer? What did you expect me to make of that?”

His eyes widened in mock offense. “Have you ever listened to the lyrics to ‘Photograph’? Don’t let the awesome guitar shred fool you, that’s a straight up love song.”

“See, now if it had been ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ I might actually have caught on.”

“Don’t think I didn’t consider it.” A lascivious smirk curved his mouth. “But I was trying to be classy and romantic in my awkward teenage boy way.”

I stroked my fingertips over his jaw. “You always seemed so cocky and confident. It’s hard to imagine you being too timid to tell me how you felt.”

“I didn’t think you felt the same way. I was afraid you wouldn’t want me.”

“I did want you.”

His blue eyes shined with tenderness. “You’ve got me now. I’m all yours, McGregor.”

I knew he was. What a privilege, to have a piece of this man’s heart. I didn’t even mind that he’d stolen such a big chunk of mine. I knew he’d take good care of it. We’d take care of each other.

“I’m thinking of getting a tattoo to that effect,” he said.“Property of Tess McGregor.”
