The intimacy was overwhelming. I couldn’t look away, but I’d never felt so exposed as I did under his potent, hungry gaze. My body bowed, every muscle tensing as I splintered beneath him, the surge of ecstasy leaving me a shaking, mindless wreck.

Donal’s lips ghosted over mine, murmuring something I was too far gone to hear. I felt him shift, and his hands cupped my ass as he lifted it higher. A whimper clogged my throat when I felt him slide out, but it quickly turned to a cry of pleasure as he grasped my hips and slammed back into me.

He thrust again, harder and deeper, his fingers digging into my flesh as he leveraged his grip on my hips. A sheen of sweat covered his face, which was caught in an expression of tortured bliss as he pistoned into me. Skin slapped against skin, rough and raw, the force of every thrust tearing sharp, breathy cries from me.

Right when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, his thrusts stuttered and grew erratic. A tremor racked his body, and he folded forward with an agonized groan, burying his face in my neck.

I ran my fingers through his hair and over his back as he lay limp and panting on top of me. Once his breathing eased, he nuzzled at my neck with a growly, contented hum. Bracing himself up on one arm, he deposited a line of soft kisses up my throat, along my jaw, and across my cheek. Before he reached my lips, he drew back and gazed into my eyes.

Neither of us spoke, as if we were both afraid of breaking the spell. An unfamiliar emotion twisted in my stomach. It spread through my body and filled up my chest before getting caught in my throat.

Ever so slowly, Donal lowered his mouth to mine. My lips parted as I reached for him, afraid to let myself think about what any of this meant.

I felt him withdraw, and he pressed one last kiss to my lips before rolling off the mattress to dispose of the condom. A chill shivered over the surface of my skin as I watched him walk into the bathroom.

The reality of what we’d done started to sink in, and with it came a huge dose of uncertainty and apprehension. Up until now, I’d had a clear goal in mind. But this part—the after part—was a big, precarious blank.

I didn’t deal well with ambiguity. What I needed to do was come up with a game plan. Figure out what the next steps were and how to navigate them. I needed time to process and strategize my next move.

Sitting up and scooting to the foot of the bed, I bent to retrieve my dress from the floor.

“What are you doing?” Donal asked, coming back into the room. “You’re not leaving.”

“It’s late, and I don’t really do”—I waved my hand at the rumpled bed, the sheets damp and smelling of sex—“this.”

“What? Sleep in a bed?” He broke into a grin as he came closer. “Are you trying to tell me you sleep hanging upside down like a bat?”

I couldn’t help laughing. “No. It’s just that I can’t sleep next to another person. It’s nothing personal. It’s just insomnia.”

“Too bad.” He flopped onto the bed and stretched an arm out toward me. “I require at least ten minutes of naked cuddling after sex before you’re allowed to desert me. House rules.”

My eyebrows arched. “I thought I was the first woman you’d had here?”

“It’s a new rule. I just made it up. Now put the dress down and get up here.” He patted the mattress beside him. There was a smile on his lips, but his gaze was serious and challenging, daring me not to leave.

“Ten minutes, huh?” I bit my lip, my urge to flee warring with my desire not to hurt him by leaving precipitously.

“At a minimum. Longer is encouraged, but if you really want to leave after ten minutes, I’ll let you go with only a little bit of pouting.”

He was too damn appealing, that was the problem. How was I supposed to say no to him when he was all naked and charming?

“Fine.” I crawled up the bed and lay down beside him.

His arms came around me, pulling me against him. He curled his body around mine, his bare chest warming my back. One arm slipped under my pillow as the other wrapped around my waist, holding me close.

“There.” He brushed my hair aside and nestled his face against the back of my neck. “This isn’t so bad, is it?”

“No. Not bad at all.” More like divine. Not that I was going to admit that to him.

“Why would you want to leave all this to go back to your cold, empty bed?” His deep voice rumbled through his chest and into mine.

“Because I won’t be able to fall asleep.” Years of experience had taught me this was true, although the warm, fizzy feeling spreading through my limbs seemed to be saying otherwise.

His lips touched the back of my neck. “We’ll see about that.”

“Please tell me you don’t think the magic healing properties of your dick have suddenly cured my lifelong insomnia.”

“Shhhh,” he murmured. “It’s quiet time now.”
