“Of course I knew. I can always tell what you’re thinking.”

“Fuck.” I pressed my forehead against hers. “I fucking love you so fucking much.”

“Such a dirty mouth on you.”

“You love it.” It still hadn’t quite sunk in. I kept waiting to wake up from the dream.

“I really do.” Her fingers hooked in the waistband of my pants and she stood up, pulling me with her. “Now come on. It’s time to put you to bed.”

Debra appeared in the doorway of my office. “You need to get going.”

“I know,” I muttered, hurriedly scanning the email I’d just finished typing. “Let me just do…” I added a few more words. “One…” Fixed a typo. “More…” Gave it a final scan. “Thing.” I hit send.There. All done.

She glared at me, tapping her wrist—not that she was wearing a watch. It was simply her way of sayingget a move on. “You told me not to let you be late.”

“I know. I’m leaving.”

I shut my laptop and shoved it in my briefcase. Tapped my pockets, checking for my phone, and came up empty.Shit.It had to be around here somewhere. I shuffled papers and files around, looking for my damn phone.

“And yet somehow you’re still here,” Debra said.

“I can’t find my phone.” Of course it would go missing right now.Fuck.

Debra walked over to the desk and pulled my phone out from under my briefcase. “This phone?”

My entire body sagged with relief. “Thank you.”

She passed the phone to me and pointed at the door. “Now get.”

My phone started ringing as I shoved it in my pocket.

“Don’t look at it,” she warned.

“It might be Tess.” I pulled my phone out again.

“Is it Tess?” Debra asked.

I blinked at the screen as my initial surprise shifted into an icy trickle of apprehension. “No.”

“Then don’t answer it. Let them leave a message.”

I couldn’t. Not this call. I had to take it.

Shooting Debra a regretful look, I accepted the call and lifted the phone to my ear.

CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

TESS

Anxious and annoyed, I checked the time again. Donal was now officially thirty minutes late.

I was standing in the parking lot outside my dad’s nursing home because the cell signal inside the building was spotty. It wasn’t that great out here either, but it was at least good enough to send texts.

I’d already texted Donal five times in the last half hour and received a big fat nothing in response. At this point, I was pretty sure he wasn’t coming.

Holding my phone up, as if those extra few inches of height were somehow going to make all the difference, I paced around the parking lot trying to find more bars.
