Because friends don’t kiss all over each other’s bodies.

Or go on giggly late night taco adventures.

Honestly, he didn’t know what kind of relationship those aspects existed in. He’d never done those things with a girlfriend either.

Maybe he’d figure it out eventually.

But he wasn’t going to figure it out at the expense of Sabine’s heart.

He grabbed his bag and met her at the door.

“Hey,” he said, getting her attention.

“Very serious face, I see,” she teased, coming to stand close to him.

He gazed down into her beautiful eyes and tried to keep his smile from being too large. “I’m going to be busy working for the next couple of weeks.”

“Me too.” She blew out a breath. “My students have semester tests and finals to prepare for, so my calendar is very full in December.”

Now why did her saying that bother him? Wasn’t that what he’d just been trying to tell her?

“Just because you don’t hear from me doesn’t mean I’m avoiding you. Or that I forgot about you,” he continued, staying on course.

She flashed him a bright smile. “I know. Same goes for me.”

See? There was no one like her. He could tell her things and shegot it.He didn’t have to explain it ten different ways until it made sense. She heard him, and whether or not the words made sense, she seemed to have the cypher required to decode it.

Which just solidified what he’d already decided.

He needed to figure out what he wanted and stop wasting her time.

She was too important for him to be such a dipshit.

“Ahh, I like you.” He heaved a sighed and then wrapped her in a hug. “Thank you for being the best.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead, lingered for a beat, and finally left.

He was unlocking the door to his condo when he thought, maybe I’ll ask her to go to Saint-Tropez for Christmas.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

INTENTIONS

DAVE

He made it three days.

Three days without seeing her, talking to her, hearing her laugh.

It had felt more like three months.

Which, okay, yes, time passed differently for him.

But his feelings were his feelings, and apparently Sabine owned every single one of them.

But he still needed to maintain distance. He knew it as surely as he knew that his next album was going to have a very specific feel to it.

If only because he needed to make sure his feelings were what he suspected they were. Without the distraction of his attraction.

It was strange though.
