He thought he’d been in love a few times in his life.

What he felt for Sabine was familiar…but different too. Bigger, more intense, calmer. How did that work? Hell if he knew. You figure it out.

On day four he walked into a tattoo parlor and got something he said he’d never do: a tattoo for a woman.

Everyone knew that getting a tattoo for a significant other was a kiss of death, a curse, bad luck. He had mocked many of his friends for doing the same.

“Good?” the artist asked as Dave examined the stencil on his skin.

Words scrawled along his inner wrist on the left arm.

the force is with her

What if it was a curse?

What if getting something written on his skin for Sabine accelerated the end of everything?

Would he immediately cover those words with dark ink to block out the heartbreak?

No.

Because no matter what happened next, no matter how the rest of their lives progressed, he didn’twantto forget this feeling.

He wanted to be reminded that it was possible to fall in love.

Which was why he’d chosen to put it on his wrist. So he could see it every day for the rest of his life.

“Yeah. Let’s do it.”

* * *

He made it another three days before he finally couldn’t take it anymore.

The elevator doors opened and Kara stepped onto the floor.

“Motherfucking shit fuck!” Kara hissed, grabbing her chest with a hand and staggering back a couple steps.

“Sorry.” Dave muttered, getting to his feet. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“What the hell are you doing in the hallway? I nearly had a shit hemorrhage.” Kara glared at him.

“I just…” He shrugged because he didn’t know what else to do. By the time he’d figured out he wanted to see her, it was the middle of the night. He got to her door and sat down in the hallway as he debated whether to knock, call, or go home.

Hours had passed and he hadn’t yet decided.

Kara regarded him critically. She gestured with her head for him to follow her. “C’mon. I’ll make you tea.”

“Are you sure?” he asked. “I don’t want to wake her up.”

She shoved her key in the lock and eyed him. “We’re not waking her up. But it’s time you and I had a conversation.”

He hesitated in the open door. Did he want to have a conversation with Kara? Sure, she’d been cordial to him but those had all been times Sabine had been there too. That one time they had been alone she had kind of threatened him.

Not kind of.

She had definitely threatened him.

He had successfully avoided being alone with Kara since.
